Bears Frustrated at Barnton
Congleton had new signings Thomas Stevens and Lewis Willingham in their side as they travelled to Cheshire neighbours Barnton last Wednesday night.
The Bears started the game in determined style and took a deserved lead on 5 minutes. Persistence from Jason Carey
lead to a corner which Johnathan Cavanagh struck perfectly to Declan Fletcher, who headed home unmarked. 1-0
The Bears continued to control the game and the home side had only a handful of half chances, all dealt with comfortably. Carey almost made it 2 -0 on 18 minutes. He robbed the defender and shot over the advancing keeper, only to see him make a great recovery and tip the ball out for a corner. Barnton almost scored in their own net on 27 when Fletcher and Emini Adegbenro
combined well with the latter crossing and the defenders lunging move putting the ball just wide of the post.
Cavanagh took a free kick on 37 minutes which curled just over the bar.
Half Time Barnton 0-1 Congleton Town
Congleton began the second half in control and first Adegbenro put in a great cross which Carey jut failed to connect with and then Cavanagh hit a screamer, just wide of the keeper but the stretching Fletcher couldn’t get his deflected volley on target. The Bears were still having the lion’s share of possession but Barnton were getting back into the game and creating more chances.
On 76 minutes ne signing Lewis Willingham
picked up the ball just outside the box, looked up and hit a shot over the keeper, unfortunately it ricocheted back off the bar. Two minutes later Barnton equalised when former Bear Chris Smith picked the ball up on the left, advanced and fired a shot under Jones, 1-1
Fletcher then had a header from a corner cleared off the line and in the dying seconds Barnton thought they had the winner when a scramble in the Bears defence saw the ball smashed onto the underside of the cross bar and away.
Full Time Barnton 1-1 Congleton Town
This was not a great performance from Congleton in a game which, on paper, they should have won.
