Corby’s run of games against top of the league opposition cane to an end when they faced league leaders Old Newtionans at the weekend. Old Newts where of the mark right from the start and continued to score regularly through out the first half. They didn’t have it all their own way though as the game progressed the Corby side started to settle and defended well, the scrum was solid and they competed in the line outs winning most of Old Newts put in,s. Shaun Hall got of the mark with his first try for the club and this seemed to boast his confidence and he went on to make a try saving tackle 5 mins after his score. The half end with Old Newts scoring 43 points from 4 converted and 3 unconverted Try’s to Corby’s unconverted Try
HALF TIME – OLD NEWTONIANS 1st XV 43 v 05 CORBY 1st XV
The second half was a completely different affair, the away side gained confidence in themselves and when they ran at the Old Newts they just couldn’t contain the Corby side. This was epitomised with a superb individual Try by Steven Campbell and the extras were taken by Steven Moore. Corby spent most of the half pressing the Old Newts put couldn’t put this into points. Old Newts kept catching Corby on the break and this cost Corby dearly by conceding 3 converted and one unconverted Try’s.
FULL TIME – OLD NEWTONIANS 1st XV 69 v 12 CORBY 1st XV
The last few weeks have been tough for the boys playing 4th ,3rd, 2nd, and finally 1st place. We have learned a lot from the games and the second half performance was one of the best I have seen the guys play this year. They defended well in spells, the scrum was top notch and our line outs work well. Yes we are still naïve in areas of the game that cost us to lose points. But this is a team in development and I believe in time we will be winning games it just takes time.
