Corby have only themselves to blame for the result this weekend. Saturday morning their squad looked to be strong and confidence was high obtaining a result. However at the last minute six players called off due to family or work commitments. In the end after making phone calls the bare 15 was mustered up for the trip to Thorney.
Corby took advantage of the weather conditions and started the game with the wind at their backs. This paid off and they were soon awarded a penalty which they failed to convert. Shortly after the Thorney’s 10 went on a individual run that ended with a Try which was converted. Corby responded and shortly after another missed penalty the pack pushed Thorney back from a scrum in their 22 and Andy Findley scored for Corby. Steven Campbell failed to convert.
Thorney’s Fly half and full back ran the show from there on in and the half ended with Thorney scoring a further 3 Trys and two conversations

The second half was delayed due to a injury to Corby hooker Dougie Macklin who had to be taken to hospital with a neck injury. Fortunately, Dougie has only done muscle damage. The numbers had to be made up on the pitch by the coach. The position was made worse when Corby’s 13 was yellow carded for a high tackle and then prop Mick Stark also had to retire with an injury. Thorney took full advantage of this by running in 23 points with 4 unconverted Trys and a penaltly

We have only ourselves to blame this weekend. We had a real chance of getting something from this game. Its heartbreaking when players call off at the last minute. But in this economic climate work comes first and that’s what pays the bills at the end of the day.
