Corwen Reserves hosted local rivals Ruthin Town in their second game in three days, with the added disadvantage of having 24 hours less rest than their opponents, but the home side were still determined to keep the local bragging rights.

The first chance of the game fell to Corwen’s Tom Williams, who sent a curling shot past the Ruthin goal.

Corwen’s Harry Pooler picked up an ankle injury defending Ruthin’s next attack, which must have had an affected his play, as his clumsy challenge lead to Ruthin being awarded a penalty kick. Former Corwen player and Ruthin captain Dafydd Jones stepped up to take the spot kick, however he couldn’t celebrate, as Corwen keeper Jamie Bodden guessed right and made a save followed an even better save to deny Dafydd from the shot on the rebound (picture above).

A Nick Owen cross found Ioz Jones in the danger area, but the Corwen striker could only flick the ball over the cross bar.

The deadlock was broken when a high ball was played into the Corwen box, where it was collected by ex-Corwen player Jason Williams who scored with a great finish just beyond Jamie’s Reach.

A minute before the break Corwen came close to levelling the scores when a corner was headed towards Nick Owen, who saw his header tipped over by Jones.

There was still time for Ruthin to attempt to double their advantage, as Dafydd Jones tried his luck from a free kick two minutes into stoppage, but he could only send his effort over the bar. Dafydd tried his luck from a dead ball again in the second half, but he ended with the same result.

With ten minutes to play a Ruthin Town throw in was played into the danger area, where the ball eventually found its way on to head of substitute Dion Lloyd to head the ball home to double his side’s advantage.

Corwen franticly went in search of a way back into the game and came close to doing so from a Scott Evans free kick, who found the run of James Davies, who could only send the ball narrowly wide.

In stoppage time Andrew Roberts tried his luck to get his side in the scoresheet, but he saw effort tipped wide by Jones.
