Newcastle Emlyn Under 16 Girls 3 v 0 Corwen Under Girls. FAW Cup Semi-Final (Played at Latahm Park, Newtown), 05/03/2017

Early morning snow in Corwen did not damper any enthusiasm to this eagerly awaited game as a large crowd travelled down the A5 to support the Girls as second year running found themselves playing a Welsh Girls Cup Semi Final at Newtown.

The first half was a very cagey affair, with both teams able to cancel each other out. A few wayward shots from midfielder Heledd Roberts that's all, until 5 minutes from time both sides had excellent opportunity to score, firstly Emlyn's Chloe Fletcher from a corner had a clear header only to place the ball wide and downfield from a good move involving Elisa Williams and Katie Armstrong, Thalia McGrail blasted over.

Half time 0-0.

In the second period Newcastle Emlyn totally took over proceedings and Corwen had no answer, as the midfield trio of Nieve Jenkins, Lani Hogben and Cara Currado had unfortunately Corwen's counterparts in their pockets and however hard Corwen huffed and puffed they could not get forward in numbers to the threaten.

From a floating free kick Newcastle Emlyn took the lead, as goalkeeper Elliw Ford failed to gather cleanly, allowing Chloe Fletcher to tap home. This goal unnerved Corwen, causing them to hesitate in critical areas being indecisive and literally taking too many touches on a flat 3G pitch allowing the midfield of Emlyn to nick the ball and constantly back turn Corwen to set up good chances.

As time ran out from a Goal kick mess up No 11 Cara Currado doubled her teams lead and this was followed by a smasher from Mary Elysha Jones for a convincing 3-0 Newcastle Emlyn victory.

To their credit the bravehearts of Corwen never gave up and near the final whistle came narrowly close to scoring.

Lessons learnt - get your first touch right, your second one should be the pass or a shot!, but never mind season is far from over - top of League, in the North Wales Association Cup final and also in the semis of the North Wales League Cup there is trophies to play for. All at Corwen FC and more importantly all of Corwen are very proud of everyone of you for your commitment and hopefully achievements to come!
