Tough day at the office losing 69-0 to very strong well drilled old lems 2’s.

Coventrians development team didn’t have as enjoyable time as the first team losing very heavily to very strong old lems 2s. It was always going to be tough afternoon for Covents after they got word that old lems had called there 2nd team game off away at Pinley in favour of much easier home game against Covents. With the clock reaching 13:45 and only half hour to go Covents only had 11 players and was ready to turn around and head home. Eventually we managed to get enough together to get 15 players out.
Wasn’t much of warm up and it showed with the first 10 minutes Old lems raced away to 19-0 lead scoring 3 tries in quick succession. Covents managed to get some spark and made Old lems work much harder for there next scores with some big tackles coming in from the ever-impressive Marcus O’Neill, who at only 17 looks to be player to watch for the future. Mark Taylor had good game putting in some good tackles and kicking the ball into the right territories to get us some go forward. Unfortunately, old Lems had strong back line with Covents being inexperienced in the backs having players play out of position and having three 17-year olds playing with one making his senior debut. Covents backs were always going to have very tough game.
The game was made short with first half playing 35 minutes with them running in about 50-0 at half time.
The second half started but unfortunately had to be halted as one of there players got nasty injury to his ankle with snap being heard from on the side lines. Ambulance was called but managed to carry player off to continue with the game. Everyone had Covents hope the guy makes speedy recovery.
The stoppage didn’t help Covents as straight from the scrum they went and scored with the centre running about 60 metres with not one tackle being made on him. Covents didn’t give up and managed to only concede another 3 tries all game. Covents had some good moments with good pressure being made and second half seemed to be much fairer contest. Steve Powell made some good charging runs, with tacklers bouncing off him and Bops also making good ground when he had the ball. Mark Tylor was putting in some good kicks to keep Lems pinned in their half and really had to work to move the ball out.
69-0 was final score. Mention goes to the three 17-year olds and especially to the lad making his first senior game debut did very well against very good well drilled strong team. Big thanks also to three Manor park lads who made the trek over to help with numbers.

Final word on this. 2018 for the development team has continued where 2017 left off with many players getting very frustrated with lack of commitment with player numbers and availability come game day. It’s already been said games will not continue to be played if numbers are lacking. Hope this is not the way and hope for more commitment going forward as some good young lads are playing and won’t stay around if it continues with some regular players thinking the same. Something needs to be looked at because we need to be putting two strong teams out every week. I believe with regular team out the development team have potential to beat anyone but it comes from commitment as regular as you can.

We look forward now to next week. Let’s all make big effort as first team have big game against Stoke and development have Copsewood where both teams will be hoping to avenge the losses earlier on in the season.
