COVENTRY DRAGONS MEDIA LAUNCH

Coventry Dragons on the BBC

On Friday 11th February Coventry dragons launched there media campaign and featured on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire. Head Coach Lee Ashford and Chairman Andy Rowlands went to see Geoff and Clive from the Sport Talk show to talk about the start of Coventry dragons and there ambition. The start of the interview saw Andy talking about the need for the dragons with a brief description on there aims for the coming season. He expressed the desire to climb the leagues, build a junior section, a ladies team and work within the local community.
Andy commented “Rugby League is a great way to stay fit, make friends and build confidence. This will be part of the clubs ethos”

Lee went on to talk about the player base that the Dragons will want to attract and that there will be players from the Bears National 3 winning side playing along side Union players who are new to the world of Rugby League.
Lee said “There are so many players at Coventry’s Union clubs it feels like we are in a gold mine just trying to dig out the best talent. With a bit of coaching these lads could become very talented League players” (He defiantly didn’t say mine field)

Clive Eakin then moved the discussion on to the Super League. He raised the question could our city house a Super League Franchise? Both Andy and Lee agreed that there was an opportunity in the Midlands for a franchise and in the future if the sport keeps expanding Coventry could be the home of that franchise. Coventry already has two amateur clubs and another just on the outskirts so it would be the obvious choice. As long as they are called Coventry Dragons!

Andy, Lee and Clive then talked about the coming events surrounding the Dragons. Lee mentioned the players meeting on Wednesday 16th February 7:30pm and Pre season on Wednesday 16th March 7:00pm both at Coventry Welsh. Andy then talked about the club launch on Saturday 9th April (venue TBA). The Dragons will play a round robin style tournament against both Northampton and Leamington. This will also double as a family fun day. There will be entertainment for all the family, a hog roast, ice creams, face painting and much much more.
