Coventry Sphinx Under 18s were in fine goal scoring form again and four goals in the opening half an hour effectively settled the contest in favour of the Sphinx Youth. The chief architect of the win was Dan Kelly who bagged himself a first half hat-trick. Midfielder Max Howard got on the score sheet again and full back Jevon Fraser Walters scored his debut goal in injury time to complete the scoring.
Sphinx came flying out of the traps and two quick fire goals from striker Dan Kelly gave them the early advantage. Centre midfielder Max Howard then popped up in the penalty area and guided a header into the top corner that left Rugby with a mountain to climb. Dan Kelly was looking sharp and just before the half hour mark he scored the goal of the game with a finish that oozed class. His effort into the top corner left the keeper with no chance and that was his hat-trick inside the first 30 minutes. The Rugby Borough keeper had a busy evening and looked a good prospect. His kicking was sound, he was comfortable with the ball at his feet and produced some impressive saves to stop Sphinx totally running away with the game.
HALF TIME: COVENTRY SPHINX U18 4-1 RUGBY BOROUGH U18
Sphinx manager Dave Bull took the opportunity to make full use of his substitutes and they all had an impact on the game which demonstrates the depth of the under 18s squad at Sphinx Drive. The Rugby keeper once again kept Sphinx at bay but Sphinx did manage to beat him one more time with a 90th minute strike from left back Jevon Fraser Walters. His drive was finished smartly at the near post and that completed the scoring for a Sphinx side that has now scored 14 goals in their first three games of the season. Maximum points from their two league games has set them up nicely for next weeks visit to Division new boys Barrow Town. The key to victory tonight was the willingness of all of the squad to work hard and give their talent the best chance to shine. They did that on Thursday and they certainly responded perfectly to last weeks FA Youth Cup exit.
