The Coventry Sphinx Youth team exited the FA Youth Cup in a seven goal thriller at Sphinx Drive on Thursday evening. Sphinx had raced into a two goal lead inside twenty minutes but a spirited Coton Green hit back with two late first half goals. Coton Green went into the break in the ascendency and they went on to take the lead just after the hour. They wrapped up a remarkable comeback in the 90th minute although there was still time for Sphinx substitute Owen Wassall to give them a brief scare in added time.
Manager Dave Bull had striker T’ahje Smith missing due to injury but had a strong side out nonetheless. Sphinx got off to a good start and an excellent move was rounded off by wide man Owen Gorman after just 10 minutes. Sphinx were looking dangerous going forward but so were Coton Green and it was no surprise to see another goal come along so soon. A foul in the box was punished by an Alex Pearson penalty to put Sphinx two goals up. Coton Green responded well and got their reward in the 39th minute. Good work on the left ended with a cross fizzing across the six yard box and the ball was steered home to reduce the deficit. The goal gave Coton Green real encouragement and on the stroke of half time they scored the goal of the game. Sphinx cleared the ball from their own box and the high ball was met with an unbelievable strike on the volley which the Sphinx keeper could do absolutely nothing about. A glorious dipping volley with exceptional technique has to be applauded and that is up there with the best strike you’re likely to see at Sphinx Drive this season. The equaliser had turned the game on its head with Sphinx going off looking downhearted and Coton Green looking full of belief.
HALF TIME: COVENTRY SPHINX U18 2-2 COTON GREEN U18
Coton Green were now well and truly back in the game and they went in front in the 62nd minute with another cross dispatched clinically. A cross was drilled in from the by-line on the left and a smart first time finish gave the visitors the lead for the first time in the match. Sphinx had a big shout for a penalty and Alex Pearson saw a free kick superbly saved but their hopes were put to bed in the 90th minute with a good individual effort. Sphinx substitute Owen Wassall had caused problems since his introduction and he grabbed his second goal in two games in injury time. It was a smartly taken goal from the new boy and he’s certainly showing real promise in his two appearances.
Coton Green had shown a tremendous spirit to get back in the game and once the momentum was with them they proved difficult to stop. Best of luck to them in the next round and I’m sure they will once again be providing difficult opposition.
