Coventry Sphinx continue their travels around the Midlands with a trip to Shropshire based Shawbury United. Shawbury now play in Ludlow which is not that far away from the Welsh border and Sphinx will be hoping for a better result than the two visits to Shawbury Utd last season. Sphinx were defeated twice in a week at Shawbury last season with a FA Vase defeat promptly followed by a league defeat. There was no shortage of goals in both matches with Sphinx losing 3-2 in the FA Vase (Eggleton and Towers) and 4-3 in the league (Towers, Harkin and Downie). Sphinx have played Shawbury twice at Sphinx Drive since that double disappointment and took the points on both occasions. Last season Sphinx won 3-1 (Blackmore and Woodward x2) and last month Sphinx narrowly won 3-2 at Sphinx Drive with goals from Guest, Harkin and Woodward. Coventry Sphinx have scored 19 goals in six consecutive wins ahead of this fixture which has lifted them to 4th place in the Total Motion Midland Football League Premier Division. One of those six victories was against this weekend’s opponents Shawbury.

Shawbury currently sit bottom of the MFL Premier Division but they shouldn’t be taken for granted as previous results between the two sides show. Shawbury have rarely lost by more than one goal in the league and their one home win was the scalp of Worcester City. Shawbury have had a tough run of fixtures since the win against Worcester and have now gone six league games without a win. That culminated with a 2-0 defeat at Rugby Town in midweek. Shawbury went behind in the first minute of that match but Rugby had to wait until the 80th minute to get the crucial second goal to secure the points.
