Saturday was a day to forget for Coventry Sphinx with their recent run of good form coming to an abrupt end after a poor showing on the road. Lye Town were worthy winners and Sphinx could have no complaints with the result. A pair of Jack Till goals did the damage and he was the man who caused Sphinx problems all afternoon so it was fitting that he was the match winner. Although the hosts didn’t make sure of victory until injury time, it would have been harsh on them if they had failed to take the points from this encounter.
It was a grim day in Lye but the sticky pitch was playable and we got this MFL Premier Division match underway. It was a scrappy start but it was Lye Town who were to get a grip on of the game. Jack Till was the main outlet on the Lye Town right and he was giving the Sphinx defence a torrid time. Sphinx were offering little in attack but it was one of their attacks that led to a Lye Town counter attack and a penalty for the home side. A Sphinx move broke down deep in Lye territory and a quick ball up the line was brought under control superbly by Till who went on to cut inside and thread a lovely ball through to his opposite wide man. Michael Quirke came across but his challenge brought down the man and a penalty was awarded. Lawley stepped up for penalty duties but Tom Cross is developing a reputation for penalty saves and he produced one again with a magnificent stop low to his right. Sphinx were still in the game but the escape didn’t give them the required lift and only wasteful finishing from Lye Town had prevented Sphinx going into the break on the losing side.
HALF TIME: LYE TOWN 0-0 COVENTRY SPHINX
Sphinx needed to improve in this half and they also needed to get a grip on Jack Till if they were going to get a result in this match. They did neither and it was no surprise when Lye Town took the lead just before the hour. It was also no surprise that the well worked goal was finished by Jack Till. Sphinx had some half chances but they were mainly nullified by a strong and determined home defence. Lee Knibbs continued to make attacking substitutions to try to find the equaliser. Sphinx were still in with a chance in this game but they could thank poor finishing from their hosts for that. Sphinx were going all out for the equaliser in injury time as demonstrated by goalkeeper Tom Cross joining the action in the opposition penalty area. The absent Cross allowed Lye Town to get the second goal with Jack Till again proving too strong and quick for Sphinx and he was left to pass the ball into a vacant net. That confirmed a defeat in a game that should have been put to bed earlier. Lye Town were worthy winners and Sphinx need to lick their wounds, put this match behind them and get on with the task of preparing to visit league leaders Ilkeston Town next weekend.
FULL TIME: LYE TOWN 2-0 COVENTRY SPHINX
COVENTRY SPHINX MAN OF THE MATCH: TOM CROSS
Charlie Faulkner had plenty of energy in his play and gave it his best this afternoon. Tom Cross is the man to take the Sphinx Man of the Match today. An exceptional penalty save kept Sphinx in the game and although he was assisted by some sloppy finishing, he performed well in the Sphinx goal and made some important saves.
COVENTRY SPHINX TEAM: CROSS, STRINGFELLOW (Jackson 64 mins), HUDSON (Shaheen 81 mins), DOWNIE (O’Grady 63 mins), QUIRKE, GUEST, FAULKNER, CAIRNS, GRANDISON, WOODWARD ©, HARKIN.
Coventry Sphinx are back to action on Saturday 15th December with an away trip to Ilkeston Town. A big crowd is expected for this match when Sphinx travel to the league leaders.
