Sphinx were defeated at Sphinx Drive on Saturday and while the score line may suggest it was a one sided affair, it was far from that and three late goals when Sphinx were pushing hard for an equaliser gave the final score an unattractive look for the hosts. Quorn were worthy winners however and Sphinx will need to react well with some tough games ahead of them.
Sphinx started bright enough and were moving the ball around well when in possession. They were getting into some good areas but a powerful Quorn defence limited them to glimpses of goal with perhaps the best chance falling to Ryan Harkin but his snap shot was just too high. Quorn were proving particularly troublesome on the counter attack with the trickery of Sean Williams proving particularly problematic to the Sphinx defence. It was Williams who opened the scoring at the far post after a cross from the left just before the half hour mark. That goal changed the shape of the game and Quorn went on to have the better of the first half. Sphinx needed to find a solution to the problems that had presented themselves in the first half and the manager would probably utilise his strong bench to have the desired effect.
HALF TIME: COVENTRY SPHINX 0-1 QUORN
Quorn were beginning to look reasonably comfortable on their lead and Lee Knibbs wasted little time in introducing midfielders Callum Woodward and Charlie Faulkner. Quorn were getting at Sphinx keeper Tom Cross too often for comfort but Cross was equal to the Quorn efforts. Sphinx had the odd chance themselves but the Quorn keeper had far less to do than the Sphinx keeper with Quorn standing firm at the back. With the game still poised at 0-1 we then had a disallowed Towers goal for a foul on the keeper as he headed the ball home. That was the closest Sphinx got and as they left themselves more open they were eventually punished with a good finish from Butler. The Sphinx defence had allowed Quorn too much freedom in the penalty area at this point and it was no real surprise when Quorn took full advantage. Sphinx looked beaten now and two late goals from Steve Hart rubbed salt into the wounds. A fully merited win for the visitors and a quick lesson that you should underestimate no one in this division. Quorn were as good up front as they were strong at the back and that sort of combination often wins games.
FULL TIME: COVENTRY SPHINX 0-4 QUORN
COVENTRY SPHINX MAN OF THE MATCH: JACKSON DOWNIE
Tom Cross could do little about the goals but made some good saves and continues to impress with his distribution. Jackson Downie was a bright spark in the Sphinx midfield and continues to maintain his good form.
