Fixture: South Normanton Athletic v Coventry Sphinx
Date: Saturday 3rd November, 2018
Venue: M.J. Robinson Structures Arena, Lees Lane, South Normanton, DE55 2AD
PREVIEW: Coventry Sphinx head into this fixture with two consecutive wins behind them. A 5-2 home win was followed by a hard fought 1-0 win at Romulus on Monday night. Recently Coventry Sphinx have added a couple of new signings to their squad with Joel Grandison and Elliot Palmer joining the club. Grandison has started well with two goals in his first two games. Palmer was a substitute in the last match at Romulus and awaits his Sphinx debut.
COVENTRY SPHINX: Coventry Sphinx dug out a good result on Monday night with a 1-0 victory over Romulus. Grandison hit the winning goal although Sphinx had a Tom Cross penalty save to thank for the three points in the end. Prior to this, Sphinx were on the goal trail with a 5-2 home win against Long Eaton Utd which included a Harkin hat-trick.
THE OPPOSITION: South Normanton may be bottom of the Midland Football League Premier Division at the moment but they should not be underestimated. They have proven difficult to beat and their defensive record is on a par with teams currently in the top 10. They are without a win in their 5 league games at home but they have had some difficult opposition to contend with. Early in the season they suffered 1-0 defeats to Westfields and Coventry Utd. They then fell to a 4-1 defeat to Lye Town. More recently they held title challengers Worcester City to a 0-0 draw and then narrowly lost 2-1 to Wulfrunians. Goals have proven hard to come by in the league but they have now scored at least once in eight of their last nine league and cup games.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS: Last season, Coventry Sphinx achieved the double over South Normanton with two wins in the autumn. The first match was at Sphinx Drive and all the goals came in the first half. South Normanton took an early lead but Sphinx responded with goals from Woodward and Harkin to take the points. The away fixture came only weeks later and Sphinx took a 3-2 win in that match. A Harkin double and a Woodward goal sent Sphinx into a three goal lead but two goals from South Normanton made them work hard for victory.
