The Coventry Sphinx Youth Team produced one of their performances of the season on Thursday night with a magnificent display of attacking football. Dan Kelly set them on the way inside three minutes and they were 3-0 up before we hit the 15 minute mark. Further goals in the second half took the tally to six including two fierce strikes from substitute T’ahje Smith.
Midfielder Max Howard took the responsibility of leading the team out onto the pitch and his usual all action display was a key part in the victory. Dan KELLY is the leading scorer in the division and 170 seconds into this game he was finding the top corner with a goal of real class. Kelly was on the edge of the penalty area and his high effort dipped and curled into the top corner of the goal leaving the keeper with no chance. It wasn’t long before Dan KELLY hit the back of the net again with an incredible turn of pace taking him away from the Coton Green defence. The finish was as cool as you like as he slotted past the exposed keeper. Sphinx really had their tails up now and a corner soon followed. A magnificent header from Jamie DRAPER made it three inside 15 minutes.
Coton Green had barely had time to settle into the game before they found themselves 3-0 down but they recovered and got themselves a foothold in the game. Sphinx continued to push for more goals but Coton Green were starting to get into good areas themselves. On the half hour mark Sphinx needed keeper Kieran Hart to be at his best with a fine smothering save but a minute later Coton Green got their goal with an effort from Mackey. Sphinx defended with a real desire while continuing to attack at every opportunity but we had no further goals before the break.
HALF TIME: COTON GREEN U18 1-3 COVENTRY SPHINX U18
Coton Green continued to look for a second goal to give them a chance of getting back into the game but the introduction of T’ahje Smith gave them a different problem to deal with. Within 10 minutes of entering the play, SMITH was a hammering an unstoppable strike inside the far post to extend the Sphinx lead. Sphinx Under 16s players Harvey Billing and Mo Billy soon joined the action and they refreshed the Sphinx attacking play alongside Smith. It was SMITH who got the 5th goal with an impressive piece of play that started with a subtle drop of the shoulder, continued with a sudden acceleration into the box and ended with a another fierce drive into the bottom corner. The final goal came with Sphinx on the attack again as we approached full time. In a crowded penalty area, James SEMWANGA reacted quickly to a loose ball by hitting a first time effort just inside the post to complete the scoring. It was a goal Semwanga had earned for his work rate alone and capped off a fine team display.
Sphinx scored some excellent goals and defended with a real desire. That combination proved to be a winning combination and if they can maintain that level of performance it won’t be long before the first team come calling.
