85’ T’ahje Smith (Coventry Sphinx)
The Coventry Sphinx Under 18s maintained their recent form with an attacking display that ended with another six goal win and the victory over Malvern Town moves them into the third round of the League Cup. Kelly and Smith were in the goals again with a double each and the defence were strong with a clean sheet the reward for them.
Dan KELLY gave Sphinx the lead after 20 minutes but they had other good chances to score and have an even better lead. The Malvern keeper did well to keep out Dan Kelly on a number of occasions but a quick fire double on the stroke of half time put Sphinx in the driving seat at the break. James SEMWANGA was the young man who made it 2-0 when he got on the end of a low cross from the right. Almost immediately after the restart, Dan KELLY was played through on goal and he tucked away the chance well to make it three at half time.
HALF TIME: COVENTRY SPHINX U18 3-0 MALVERN TOWN U18
A significant part of the excellent results recently has been the strength of the whole squad and that was highlighted by the introduction of T’ahje Smith and Owen Gorman at half time. Within six minutes of the pair joining the play Sphinx added a fourth. The alert SMITH seized on a back pass and scurried through to poke past an exposed keeper. Three minutes later Smith combined with Gorman to extend the lead. Smith got the better of the Malvern defence down the left and his accurate ball across goal was dispatched by GORMAN to put the game well out of the visitors reach. Sphinx continued to create chances but they had to wait until five minutes from the end to add their sixth of the night. T’ahje SMITH was the scorer again with a trademark drive into the bottom corner.
Malvern have an excellent record in their division but they couldn’t cope with a Sphinx side brimming with confidence tonight. The performance of every Sphinx player contributed to this victory and the watching first team management must have walked away with plenty to consider.
