A glorious afternoon for cricket

For our penultimate game of the 2020 season we travel to Fairford to play Kempsford in a 35 over match.
Having lost the toss Cowley were put into bat. Dave Hollard and Eric weathered a masterclass of opening bowling but found run-getting was hard work in the sunshine. Dave's vigilant innings came to end when he was caught at slip in the 17th over having scored 26 of an opening stand worth 49. Unfortunately Cowley were not really able to press on from that foundation. Ed uncharacturistically chipped to cover and Nick missed a straight one to be given out LBW. Jonny and Eric threatened to take the attack to Kempsford and put on 38 in 7 overs before Jonny was bowled for 14. Adrian was bowled for a 3rd ball duck which brought Will to the crease. Will and Eric pushed on but Cowley continued to find the fielders more often than the gaps. Eric passed a well made 50 and then was stumped in the final over (having added 41 with Will). Keith saw off the final couple of deliveries (leaving Will 18 not out) and we finished on 139 for 6 from our 35 overs - well aware this was below par.
The sun continued to shine and the shadows lengthened as the Kempsford no2 shot out of the blocks and raced into the 40s. Keith finally got his man as Eric held on to a good catch but Kempsford had put themselves in a great position. Although we then managed to slow the scoring Ed, Jonny (along with suicidal fielding by Dave Hollard at silly mid-on), Will and Nick toiled with no reward as the runs were chipped away, with no clear cut chances offered. Mike provided us with a welcome wicket as he produced a peach of a delivery to knock over the other openers off stump but he had already passed 50 and Kempsford cruised home with no further alarms to win by 8 wickets and nearly 10 overs to spare.
Not quite the exhilarating game we experienced last year against this opposition although again Eric was Cowley's best player.
One game to go as we head to Tewkesbury next week for the season finale.
