Giant killers at it again!!!
Berffro beat Boded in qualifying round 1 of JD Welsh Cup
Yesterday we traveled the short distance to face old foes Boded in the first qualifying round of the JD Welsh Cup. With both sides now playing in separate leagues following Bodeds promotion to Welsh Alliance One, this was an eagerly anticipated encounter but one we went into as huge underdogs with many not giving us a hope at all, as the Cae Ty Crisiton outfit have made an hugely impressive start to life in the higher division.
The tie started off at the usual frantic pace for a derby between us both, strong tackles in midfield along with neither side really settling down on the ball led to a scrappy first quarter but it was surprisingly Berffro who settled sooner and the first big incident of the game gave the referee a decision to make. Steve Jenks, in an unusual midfield role, latched onto a Nath Moore cross inside the box and laid the ball back perfectly for the on rushing Steve Jones and just as he looked to pull the trigger he was tripped from behind but the man in the middle deemed that there was not enough contact to warrant a penalty much to the frustration of Berffro. However the frustration was soon put to bed as we took a deserved lead. Harper, down the right, forced the Boded left back into playing a dangerous square ball across midfield some 25 yards out, Steve Bach nipped infront of his man and immedialty released the pacey Rich Pdoing who did the rest, firing low and hard beyond the home sides custodian. Bodeds sluggish start continued and before long it was 2-0, Connor did well in winning possession in midfield, and once again found Rich in acres of space and clean through on goal, the frontman steadied himself before whistling his shot across the face of goal, hitting the inside of the post and nestling into the back of the net to double our lead. The home side finally started to see more of possession, as was expected, but they came up against a very disciplined Berffro who kept their shape well and limited the in form side to half chances at most. Andrew Jones at right back was doing very well against the in form Eric Leach and limited his space well whilst on the opposite side, Earnshaw had his hands full with a very nippy winger but yet again stuck to the task extremely well and denied him space. When chances did fall for the home side, it was through some high balls played in towards their big target man, but Iwan was in no mood to give them a sniff at goal and for the first 30 Gav has very little to do in between the sticks. Despite Boded now seeing more of the ball we still carried a threat on the counter and the pace and endless running of Rich up top never let the 2 Boded centre halves settle, his nuisance running won us a free kick right on the edge of the box which Jenks will have been disappointed not to have tested the keeper as his effort fizzed over the bar. Just before the break some good individual work down the left from Nath saw him bulldoze his way past a few challenges but his cutback was intercepted with a few Berffro players poised in the box. 0-2 half time.
The half time break saw the home side make 2 changes as they went for broke, changing tactics and throwing on another striker and their chance in formation seemed to unsettle Berffro for the first 10 minutes of the restart as we struggled to adapt to their changes. Boded were given a way back into the tie on some 55 minutes when we failed to deal with a corner at the near post, the ball bouncing passed a few bodies before being turned him by the home sides big target man. With their tails up Boded were well in the ascendancy now and for the remainder of the game pummelled ball after ball into out box from every angle of the pitch as they looked for the two big strikers with the wingers looking for knock downs to feed off. Try as they might though, they couldn’t find a break through, Iwan and Si Browne put bodies on the line and Connor just in front of them was outstanding in protecting the back four and was always in and around the edge of the box, mopping up any loose balls and making one brilliant sliding block when a goal seemed inevitable for the home side. Jenks and Steve Bach continued to work hard in centre midfield in what was a tough task as the home side kept coming forward and most of the game was bypassing midfield with balls being pinged over into our area from Bodeds back line. With the clock ticking towards the 90, more bodies were thrown forward and every set piece was launched into our box but we held firm and dug in to secure an outstanding 1-2 win against the odds. Man of the Match Rich Pdoing
An incredible result, one that hardly anyone would have predicted as before kick off we were massive underdogs! From 1-11 everyone put in a huge shift and there will be some weary legs today, with some in particular playing through injuries! The back four to a man were solid and resolute, withstanding a heavy barrage of long diagonal balls in the second half, and the tireless running of the midfield 5 and Rich up top was incredible. Despite many not giving us a hope pre match, we believed in ourselves, stuck to our game plan and worked incredibly hard for each other and fully deserve to be in the hat for the next round. We must now take the same attitude and mentality into our next league game against high flying Llanerchymedd. We wish Boded all the best for the rest of the season.
