Berffro blitz Blaenau
New goals at Berffro welcomed with a goal fest
Saturday saw us return to league action following the superb cup performance away at Llanllyfni with Blaenau Ffestiniog Reserves making the trip to Cae Cynlas for the first time. The travelling side had struggled early on in the Gwynedd League and were rooted to the bottom of the league, and despite being full of confidence ourselves, we went into the fixture with caution, knowing full well that the game wouldn't be handed to us on a plate.
With that said, we kicked off at a high pace with good intensity from the off and within 100 seconds we were in front. Iwan played a long searching ball forward from the back which fell perfectly for Connor who struck it sweetly on the half volley giving the keeper no chance as it whistled passed him into the far corner. From this moment on we completely dominated and pushed for more goals to stretch our lead. Chances were created from all areas of the pitch with Ieu and Earnie doing well down the flanks, pushing high up the pitch and involving themselves in all of our attacks. With 15 minutes on the clock we doubled our advantage as Rich did well in a crowded penalty box to lay the ball off for his strike partner Andrew who steadied himself well with his first touch before blasting through a ruck of bodies. Connor was seeing plenty of the ball in midfield alongside Harper and Matty, and almost got his second of the game but his venomous strike from some 25 yards out was superbly saved by the visitors keeper, with some on the pitch thinking it was in. More chances fell as wave after wave of attacks kept forcing the pressure on Blaenau. Set pieces from Gaz and Harper caused panic in the box but the away side defended desperately and clung on to keep the score at 2-0. However, with just over 10 minutes of the half remaining, the game was completely taken away from Blaenau as 3 goals in 5 minutes took put us 5-0 up at the break. Rich Pdoing got in on the act and continued his fine goal scoring run, Harper's corner was retrieved on the far touchline by Ieu Lloyd who delivered a peach of a cross and against his much taller opponent, Rich lept brilliantly to thump a header into the top corner. He didn't have to wait long for his second, some good work down the right flank between Harper and Ieu led to Connor breaking away and picking out Matty just inside the area, his effort was scuffed and Rich was able to pounce on the loose ball and drill home through a narrow gap. And again it wasn't long before it was 5, Jenks started the move when he found Matty in acres of space with a pass out from the back, Matty drove forward before slipping a neat pass through to Andrew whose struck clinically into the far bottom corner. 5-0 half time.
The message at half time was to keep focused and push on for more. Adam and Nath were brought on early in second half and were immediately involved in proceedings. Earnie and Nath linked well down the left straight away and Nath was twice denied by the visitors' keeper when found in good positions inside the box. Blaenau for a period dug deep and seemed to settle better on the ball, their nippy left back had moved up front and kept Jenks and Iwan on their toes but they were rarely troubled at the back and dealt with any attacks with composure. Pdoing had his second hatrick in as many games just before the hour, a good pass out from defence was flicked on delightfully by Nath with his back to goal and was perfect for Rich to run onto and he made no mistake, burying his effort beyond the keeper's reach. We continued to press on for more, Harper and Andrew played a good one two down the right with Harper's shot well blocked by the Blaenau captain and then Kieran, on as a sub was found in space on the edge of the box but his powerful drive whistled just over the bar. Andrew finally got his hatrick to make it 7-0, Ieu Lloyd did superbly to beat his man down the right and picked his head up before crossing and handing it on a plate to Andrew who tapped in from 3 yards out. Kieran, who was proving a handful after coming on, had another chance to get on the score sheet, Jenks went on a surging run from the back and played a clever pass into his path, but his first touch just took the ball away from him and the covering defenders were able to scramble clear. Our performance deserved more goals and we continued searching for more, but some dogged and determined defending coupled with some wasteful finishing kept the score at 7. With less than 10 minutes left to play we had our 8th of the game and Nath got his first for the club, picked out well by Andrew, this time his finish was clinical and he wasn't to be thwarted by the keeper this time with his shot giving him no chance. There was still time for more, Andrew had a superb chance for his fourth of the game but he was denied by a quite brilliant save by the keeper as he tipped his effort over the bar. Full Time 8-0, Man of the Match Connor Rees
A good performance, 3 points and 8 goals with another clean sheet. The second half saw us ease off slightly at times but also some credit should be given to the away side, who kept going and dug deep to try and keep the scoreline down. Next week we move onto a tough game, away at Menai Bridge as we look to continue our recent fine form.
