Berffro start 2017 with dominant display
Bolton hatrick seals impressive win away at Nefyn
After a couple of weeks break following the festive period, we returned to action on Saturday and after ending 2016 with a cup win away at Nefyn, it was a sense of deja vu for us as again we made the trip to Nefyn, this time in the league with a vital 3 points at stake.
We started the game with real intent and created a couple of attacks within the opening few minutes before taking the lead with the clock showing just 4 minutes. The front two of Andrew and Bolton had already threatened to get in behind the Nefyn backline from a few early passages and they combined moments later to put us one up. We won possession in midfield and found Nath Moore in space who played a perfectly weighted pass into the channel for Andrew to scamper, he left his marker for dead with his pace, reached the byline and cut the ball back superbly into the danger area where Bolton showed his predatory instincts and finished clinically. There was no let up for the home side as we really took the game to them. Connor was in particular sharp in to tackles in midfield and putting us quickly on the front foot with some good forward passes from a deep lying role and Adam also started the game well in midfield and looked assured in possession and got forward quickly to support the attacks, linking up particularly well down the right hand side with Ieu and Andrew. Just over 15 minutes had been played before we doubled our advantage with the same combination as the first goal, again Andrew broke clear down the right following a quick pass from the midfield and after advancing into the box, his cross-shot was met at the far post by Bolton who slid in to bundle the ball over the net. With a two goal advantage we seemed to drop the tempo slightly, and if there's one thing we know about Nefyn, it's that they never give in. Perhaps sensing a bit of complacency in our game at this point, the home side seemed to lift theirs and slowly started to find their feet in the match. A few long range efforts failed to test Gav in goal but they soon found a way back into the game as some good play down the left hand side led to a good cross by the left back being met by their big target man who tapped in from some 6 yards out. The setback seemed to spur us on as we lifted our game once again and Andrew continued to be a thorn to the home side, he had a great chance to give us the 2 goal cushion again when Gaz Wyn delivered an inch perfect ball over the top from defence but his effort went inches wide of the far post. Adam then went on a surging run from midfield, leaving defenders in his wake, before slipping a fine ball through to Bolton whose first time effort took a small nick of the centre half which was enough to divert it again just wide of the post. With half time approaching however we had the 2 goal advantage our performance deserved. Jenks did well at the back to beat his man to the ball and intercept a dangerous ball forward, Ieu Lloyd then sent the ball down the touchline where Adam intelligently flicked on with his head to Andrew. He had plenty to do but left one on one with his marker, he beat him with ease and this time his shot from the edge of the box nestled into the bottom far corner. With a few minutes to go before the break Connor then broke forward well from midfield and cut back inside onto his left foot but his shot was blocked by the home side's defence. 1-3 half time
The key message at half time was not to let our performance levels slip and to make sure the next goal would be ours to kill the game off, as time and time again at Nefyn over the years a two goal lead has turned into a one goal lead very quickly which lifts the tails of the home side. For the first ten minutes after the restart we came under heavy pressure and Gav was called into action a couple of times, making a tremendous save on once occasion to keep our lead intact. Iwan and Ieu had their hands full with some direct running from the wingers but coped well throughout and managed to join in our attacking play and as the second half progressed we gradually regained our control of the match and got our fourth of the game with a swift counter attack. Connor won possession on the edge of our own box with a good tackle and picked out Andrew on the half way line with a quick pass, he turned his marker and put Bolton through on goal with a delightful ball with the outside of his foot and Gary did the rest to seal his well deserved hatrick as his shot dinked over the despairing keeper and dropped into the empty net. The home side just would not lie down and got themselves back to within 2 goals as they made it 2-4 just after 70 minutes had passed, a long ball from the back was controlled well by the left winger who finished well from a tight angle. There was little sign of a comeback however from Nefyn as we quickly put the game to bed not long after their strike with our fifth of the game. Again a good interception at the back from Jenks saw us on the attack quickly as the ball made it's way into the feet of Adam in midfield. His sublime ball over the top found Andrew bearing down on goal, as he skipped away from the keeper, however, his left foot shot was half cleared by the covering defender, the loose ball fell to Bolton on the edge of the area and he had the presence of mind to lift his head early and lofted a perfect pass square to Harper who ran onto it and met it on the volley on the edge of the box and steered it into the bottom corner. Full time 2-5, man of the match Andrew Jones.
This was the ideal performance for us after the Christmas break as we tend to be slow at getting back in to the rhythm of things but there was no sign of this on Saturday as we were quick out of the blocks from the off and took an early lead to settle any nerves there may have been. Fantastic to see Gary Bolton back amongst the goals with a great hatrick that his all round display deserved as he looked sharp and worked extremely hard for the team, and he and Andrew linked up very well and both looked sharp throughout. Andrew grabbed all the assists for Gary's goals and got on the score-sheet himself with a clinical strike. A mention also to Adam, starting in midfield he looked very comfortable in the role and linked well with the front pair and got forward well at times. A really strong performance to start the year and a very important 3 points at a ground where we historically have struggled to win in the league. Again a really good turnout from our supporters, and a massive thanks goes to you for making the journey and taking the time to come and cheers us on. Diolch!!
