Berffro secure hard fought 3 points
Berffro finally see off resilient Beaumaris in tough game
Yesterday saw us travel to face Beaumaris on the 3G in Bangor in what would prove to be a very tough encounter against a really hard working Beaumaris side. Despite recent results for the home side, we went into the game with caution as we have been caught out by them before including at home in the league last year but our recent good form meant we went into the fixture full of confidence.
The last two weeks had seen us start off really quickly setting the tempo, but this time it was he complete opposite as Beaumaris came at us from the word go and we looked sluggish and lethargic early on. Gav was called into action in the first 5 minutes and pulled off a tremendous save, tipping a goal bound effort over the bar as it headed for the top corner. Beaumaris continued to dominate possession and looked quicker and sharper off the ball as we tried to find our way into the game. Iwan and Ieu had to be at their very best to deal with some very direct running from the home sides wingers and stuck to their tasks well and the central pairing of Gaz and Jenks also had their work cut out against a lively forward but they coped well with the threat. As the half wore on we settled a little better into the game and created a few chances of our own. Harper and Matty released Andrew on a couple of occasions down the right channel but his crosses just eluded Nath in the centre and the home sides defence coped well aerially and cleared any threats well. Although the home side were in the ascendancy no real clear cut chances were created but they kept on firing in some wicked low crosses which were really difficult to defend but the game remained goalless. With half time approaching we created another half chance as Harper played a quick one two with Matty in the halfway line and then drove forward down the right, after cutting inside and beating his man he squared to Andrew who was well placed on the penalty spot but after taking a good first touch the Beaumaris defenders did well to recover and block his shot. We then created a similar chance on the opposite flank when another good piece of passing released Adam down he left and he beat his man and cut into the box but again the covering defenders were able to smother the chance. With the final play of the half a Gaz Wyn free kick was delivered well and met by Nath but his header just went wide of the post. 0-0 half time.
We knew we were in a tough battle but the key was to remain patient as we felt the chances would come. At the start of the second half there was no sign of the home side easing off with the pressure as again they got into good wide areas and fizzed in some dangerous low crosses but the final touch eluded their striker. With just over an hour played a wonderful piece of play from Andrew almost gave us the lead, he received the ball some 20 yards out and with his back to goal he turned his man brilliant and struck a sweet strike which smashed off the post. Moments later we breathed a huge sigh of relief down the other end and were thankful again to Gav as he stood up well and saved with his feet with the Beaumaris striker bearing down on him one on one. The home sides captain then went close as his left footed effort from 30 yards out whistled passed the post as both sides now threw caution to the wind to find the opener. We were dealt a blow with some 20 minutes remaining when Jenks was forced off with an injury but we didn't let it affect us and on 75 minutes we broke the deadlock. Andrew did well down the left and delivered an inviting cross which was met at the far post by Ieu Lloyd who did well to side foot a volley which looped over the keeper into the far top corner. The goal seemed to deflate the home side completely who up until the opening goal were very impressive. Moments after Ieus goal it was 2-0, Beaumaris centre half was sent off after punching the ball clear as it looked to drop in over the line and Matty cooly dispatched from the resulting penalty. To their credit Beaumaris continued with their hard working effort but with time almost up we added a third, Connor win possession in midfield and spotted Liam in acres of space. He turned goalwards and struck a low effort which founds its way into the back of the net after the keeper fumbled. 0-3 full time Man of the Match Matty Reynolds.
A huge 3 points for us after a very tough encounter with the home side on top for long periods of the game. We had to dig in when we were under the cosh and stuck to our game plan and never panicked. We always believed the goal would come and it's a great trait to win when not playing at your best. A first clean sheet in a few games is crucial and a special mention must go to Gav who was outstanding and pulled off a couple of tremendous saves and showed good handling throughout the game. Now we move onto Bethesda away next week where another vital 3 points are at stake. Thanks again for your continued support and it was great to see so many of you there again yesterday.
