Bontnewydd fielding nine under 18 year olds gave a good account of themselves on the opening day, however it was the more experienced Gwalchmai side that took the honours.
There was very little between both sides during the first half apart from a dipping drive from player manager Ian Pleming and the score at the interval was 0-0. Gwalchmai started the stronger in the second half and gained their reward when striker Dyfed Griffiths scored with an unstoppable drive when cutting into the box from the left flank. Veteran winger Steve Smith then doubled the lead on 67 minutes when heading home from the edge of the six yard box.
However the young Bont players rallied and Cai Penny Williams scored with a quarter of an hour remining, this spurred the side on and after a spell of pressure they were awarded a free kick some 7 yards outside of the box, Josh Williams' effort then hit the wall and minutes later a speculative Griffiths effort from the edge of the Bont box slipped through goalkeeper Sion Davis' hands. With fatigue showing in the young side Gwalchmai striker Griffiths completed his hat-trick and the match ended in a 4-1 home win.
