LLANRUG UNITED 3 - 0 CAERNARFON WANDERERS
United triumphed at Eithin Duon against local rivals Caernarfon Wanderers with a comfortable 3-0 win, and the much needed maximum three points. United squad was bolstered by the return of midfielder Andrew Garlick and central defender Terry Jones.
United commenced the match brightly, and on eight minutes should have taken the lead. A fine move down the left flank, quick sharp passes between midfielder Carl Griffiths and striker Rhys Roberts, and an excellent cross from midfielder Mathew Phillips, but top scorer Gareth Edwards powerful header went the wrong side of the upright.
Within two minutes striker Gareth Edwards back heel pass for Rhys Roberts to release Carl Griffiths through on goal, but Griffiths powerful low drive from an angle on the right came back off the post, and was cleared for a United corner.
On twelve minutes Wanderers goalkeeper Dylan Roberts pulled off an excellent save, a powerful low strike destined for the bottom left corner of the net from United striker Gareth Edwards. Within two minutes United finally broke the deadlock, a long goal kick by United goalkeeper Dave Ball, caused havoc in the Wanderers rearguard, central defender Kevin Lloyd could only glance the ball directly into the path of United midfielder Mathew Phillips. Phillips coolly took a couple of touches and calmly passed the ball into the back of the net to give United a deserved lead.
On twenty two minutes United goalkeeper Dave Ball produced a fine save at the near post from a Gari Jones low drive from fifteen yards out. United doubled their advantage on twenty eight minutes, a corner form the left taken by midfielder David Noel Williams, caused confusion in the Wanderers penalty area. United striker Rhys Roberts rose highest to head the ball down into the feet of United’s central defender Liam Robertson to fire the ball into the net from three yards out.
Another corner by David Noel Williams on thirty one minutes, found the feet on Mathew Phillips at the near post, but Phillips strike was well saved by Wanderers goalkeeper Dylan Roberts. Another corner from the left by David Noel Williams on forty one minutes was flicked on by Mathew Phillips at the near post for United central defender Liam Robertson whose powerful header hit the crossbar and to safety.
A two goal advantage for United at the interval, but the match should of have been wrapped up as a contest, as United failed to take full advantage of the opportunities created.
United commenced the second half as the finished the first. Within three minutes of the resumption striker Gareth Edwards fine header from a Carl Griffiths cross hit the crossbar. And on fifty one minutes striker Rhys Roberts fired a low drive the wrong side of the upright following an excellent pass from fellow striker Gareth Edwards. On the hour mark Rhys Roberts fine throw ball for midfielder David Noel Williams, but Williams strike came back off the upright.
Despite United creating several goal scoring opportunities, the visitors were dominating possession for long periods in the second half, but failed to create any significant effort on goal, as United’s rearguard held firm well marshalled by United’s captain Eifion Williams. United withdrew striker Gareth Edwards on sixty three minutes and introduced Ceirion Williams into a midfield role. And Gavin Rogerson replaced fullback Gwion Williams on seventy three minutes.
On eighty three minutes midfielder David Noel Williams failed to increase United advantage, a fine moving involving Carl Griffiths and Rhys Roberts, as Williams strike hit the Wanderers upright. Within a minute Wanderers midfielder Dylan Parry effort on goal came off United’s upright and safely into Dave Ball’s arms.
History was made on eighty six minutes, as Sion Phillips replaced Carl Griffiths; United had three brothers on the pitch in a senior match for the very first time younger brother Sion joining Mathew and Gethin.
Within two minutes of the final whistle striker Rhys Roberts and David Noel Williams exchanged passes as Noel Williams fine ball realised Ceirion Williams through on goal from the left. Williams took a touch to set up and from seventeen yards out fired a powerful low drive with his right foot across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner of the net.
