Sychdyn FC History

Sychdyn football club began life after the Second World War in 1946 and was set up by a group of local lads from the village. At the time the club was known as Sychdyn Villa and proved to be a successful outfit winning numerous trophies.

During the 60's and 70's the club were known as Sychdyn United and played their home matches on Banks Park in the village, before the club moved recently to their current home on Wats Dyke Way, under the eye of the Sychdyn Sports Association. Later the side just became known as Sychdyn and in the 80's and early 90's were managed by Malcom Parry and they won the North Wales Coast Junior Cup in the season 1985 - 86.

From 1993 - 2006 Geraint Jones managed the club and took them right the way through the junior league and then onto the Clwyd senior league. His service to the club has been outstanding and well appreciated by all who have played for him and also against his teams. Geraint still remains at the club as the team secretary and won the league secretary of the year 2 years running 2005 - 06 and 2006 - 07 seasons respectfully.

At the start of the 2006 - 07 season Andy Watton took over from Gez as the clubs new player manager and in his first season in charge finished a respectable 3rd place and the club gained promotion to Clwyd league 1.

During the 2007 - 2008 season Sychdyn brought in more players and the team gelled extremely well and finished 3rd in in Clwyd league 1 and gaining a promotion to the Clwyd Premier league at the first time of asking. The club finished a respectable mid table postion in 2008 - 2009 season. The following season the team had a poor start to the season but introduced a coach Ed Parry who had vast experience and the second half of the season were one of the most improved teams of the league and although finishing second to bottom have a great platform to build from.

The next season the team were to finish in an all time high of 2nd position and were challenging for the title up until the final 3 games of the season, however the team took the option not to apply for promotion into the Welsh National League.

Over the past couple of years the club has struggled to repeat the success it once had with key players and members of staff leaving for pastures new. the most noticeable departure was that of Andy Watton, who took the decision to leave the club for the vacant managers job at FC Argoed united halfway through the 2014 - 15 season. The club would like to thank Andy for the time and effort he spent in his 9 years at the club.

2014 - 15 season was a low point in the history of the club, with a bottom table finish almost certain and a depleted squad, Geraint Jones had a tough call to make and was almost certain to fold the club at the end of the season. With veteran players brought back into the team who had shared previous success with the club, hope was to be restored and the team managed to see out the end of the season. Towards the end of the campaign it was announced that Shaun Antrobus was to take charge of the team with Geraint still continuing his role as Secretary. Shaun has a long standing history with the club and on hearing the news that the folding of the team was an option, he agreed to bring back the players and hopefully the success the club once had in the seasons to come.

The 2015 - 16 season saw Sychdyn get back to winning ways and achieve an unthinkable turn around to seal 2nd place in the league to a very strong Rhostyllen side. Along with 2 cup semi finals, Cpd Sychdyn had well and truly turned the page and brought a winning mentality back to the club.

2016 - 17 will go down as the best in the clubs history as Shaun Antrobus's side overcame all the odds to achieve the clubs first silverware after a drought of 32 years. Winning both the North East Wales League and The North East Wales League Pemier Division Cup. A great achievement by all involved with the club.
