ANVILS RUN CITY CLOSE

Once again another frustrating result for the Anvils tonight, as the team put in a terrific second half shift but yet again came away empty handed, as Lady Luck once again poured scorn on the hard working youngsters.

City started the livelier and an early long throw from Matt Boulton caused confusion in the Anvil box, soon to be followed by a long cross field ball from Fraser Smith which found Harry Williams who in turn could only find Anvil keeper Shayne Goldsmith, something had to give and come 7 mins Tom Groom architect of most City attacks had his shot charged down only as far as the lurking Brad Silvester who prodded home. 0-1 City.

It took the Anvils 15 mins before making their first noise thro James Upton a potential danger man thro out with his long, twisting runs that had City defenders covering each other to nullify the threat, but his end result was just wide, on 20 Charlie Dodds entered the officials book, after came another Upton charge down the left but his final ball across the face was wasted by lack of Anvil bodies in the box.

For most of the half City held sway, with another Groom shot being pawed away for a corner by Goldsmith, with the same player then sending in another shot well over the bar, but generally the admirable Anvil defence with Dodds and Blair Cooney outstanding kept them at bay, fullback for the day Josh Alcock with his pace had one good cross handled by City keeper Tony Ender, but Upton remained the main threat as the half ended. HT 0-1 City.

For the second half City's Alex Ansa caused keeper Goldsmith to dive and push away his shot for the first corner of the half, followed by the same player firing wide on the hour, come 65 and another contentious incident with a City player chasing a loose ball toward goal with Goldsmith having a similar idea, result a penalty award given, once the dust had settled up strode City's striker Joe Gromett but justice prevailed with Goldsmith diving left to save.

This seemed to galvanise the Anvils to greater heights as they started to put the City defence to the sword with attack after attack which had City reeling with Anvil Andy Goodwin just over running the ball when in sight of goal, a Steve Major free kick that failed to clear the wall, and yet again another free that went well over the bar. Sam Cane also had a shot cleared as the ball continued to ping around the City box.

On 70 the main Anvil threat Upton now suffering cramp was withdrawn, no doubt to City's delight being replaced by Ryan Fletcher as the Anvils continued to stretch the City back line, with yet another free kick by Alcock floating harmlessly over, as the Anvils battled to deliver the 'coup de grace', but just to show there were two teams on the pitch City's sub Morgan Forry on 80 caused Goldsmith to produce a double save as the final minutes ticked away. FT 0-1 City.

One league goal in five matches, we can't keep relying on our defenders to batten down hatches all of the time with nothing happening in the oppositions half of the pitch.
