Crawley 1 -2 Worthing
Performance to be proud of despite the result
Sussex Mens Division 2
Crawley 2's 1 - 2 Worthing 2's
Having started the morning with 12 names on the teamsheet, Crawley had to start the match with 10. Not the best start against top of the league and undefeated Worthing!
Keith Frimley and Jamie Westwood kindly doubled up from the vets and Hammad Jalal made his 2's debut.
Despite being a player down, Worthing struggled to break through, as Crawley ran themselves into the ground chasing down the Worthing players and lost causes. Ian Berry was immense at the back, constantly breaking up the attacking play, and he was excellently aided by Priyesh Patel and Simon Teale.
Crawley looked to try and counter with Jamie Westwood distributing the ball nicely but were unable to exert much pressure with being a man down. They managed to win 1 short corner for their efforts but were unable to convert.
Worthing had a slew of short corners themselves but that man Ian Berry was a wall as the first runner and if anything did get through Chris Rockingham was equal to it. So it was going to take something a bit special for them to score. Unfortunately they produced it with a short corner routine that saw them drag flick into the top right corner of the goal.
Half time saw a slight rejig as James Fuller had made it to the game so Crawley were up to 11! Worthing had quality and continued to have chances but Crawley produced a bit of magic of there own with there first shot of the game, Alex Coote rifled in a reverse stick shot after beating several players, 1-1.
Then it got tricky, James Fuller twisted his ankle, so Crawley were effectively down to 10 again. Then the running of the 1st half started to tell and Hammad Jalal got cramp. Liam Mulcalhy showed fantastic energy to keep running, ably supported by Thomas Mackintosh but Crawleys legs faded and the Worthing sweeper managed to produce a reverse stick shot of his own into the bottom right corner, 2-1 with 6 mins to go. Crawley tried to rally but the energy just wasnt there.
The game finished 2-1, but Crawley can be incredibly proud of this performance. They left everything on the pitch.
