Chichester Chipmunks 5 - 0 Crawley
Top effort despite defeat
Sussex Mens Open League Division 2
Chichester Chipmunks 5 – 0 Crawley 2’s
Crawley made the trip down to Chichester with several new faces, with Ben and Jack Lyon, Nirmal Dhiman and Will Doherty making their debuts for the 2’s this season. The relatively young and inexperienced team talked about ensuring that the performance stayed at the high level of recent weeks. Also they brought a dedicated away fan Alan Coote who cheered them on.
Chichester were quick to set about their business and pressed well and a quick counter saw them break and slot the ball home, 1-0 down. Crawley could have capitulated at conceding that early goal but showed the Crawley spirit, and the whole team worked tirelessly, pressing and harrying, giving Chichester limited time on the ball. They were indebted to Chris Rockingham for several good saves to also keep the score at 1-0. Alex Foxcroft in particular put in some very robust challenges, making the Chichester team think twice before taking him on.
Hammad Jalal playing his 2nd game for the 2’s had some good carries and was ably aided by debutant Will Doherty on the left, and there was some good intricate play on the right with Simon Teale, Alex Coote and Thomas Mackintosh. But for all this good stuff, Crawley struggled at times to keep possession of the ball as a quality Chichester team tackled well and made it really hard for Crawley to get the ball.
Chichester doubled their lead before the break and Crawley went in 2-0 down. Whilst a tough first half, Crawley were not out of it, and they stick at their task. Theo hillman and Nirmal Dhiman worked hard, despite having limited opportunities to get on the ball. Chichester nearly became encamped in the Crawley half and scored another, but brave defending form Ian Berry and Jack Lyon shut them out time and time again. Ben Lyon also took a leaf out of Alex Foxcrofts tackling book and floored a Chichester player and showed flashes of skill down the left.
Crawley did get one good shot off with Alex Coote almost repeating his strike of last week but the keeper managed to get a foot to the ball. Crawley legs though tired from chasing the ball, and Chichester had more and more chances. Chris Rockingham put in a stellar performance to keep the score down but was unable to keep out two further strikes for the game to finish 5-0.
Crawley showed great spirit and effort and whilst they lost, they could not be downhearted with what they showed on the pitch.
