Ruthless finishing by Wealdstone's veteran striker Scott McGleish was the difference between the two sides in a skilful and open game at Hayes Lane

Cray's new-look team under Keith Bird and Micky Paye is starting to knit together, and the first half saw a pleasing confidence to take the game to Wealdstone, keeping the ball well, passing it well and competing strongly in all areas of the park.

Adrian Stone put two shots wide after good Cray moves, Jason Henry tested the 'keeper with a low drive, and then came possibly Cray's best chance when Anthony Bardon gave Dmitri Larin sight of goal from the right, but his shot was weak.

A stranger watching this action in the first half would never have known that Cray were near the foot of the table and Wealdstone near the top, but the Wands were to experience the harsh realities of football at this level when the visitors went up a gear in the second half.

McGleish had given notice of his intentions with an overhead kick that whistled inches wide of goal in the 44th minute, and he made the decisive intervention that turned the game Wealdstone's way in the 65th minute.

A corner-kick from the right was flicked on at the near post for McGleish to ram a header through the crowded goalmouth and into the net.

When handball was given against Aaron Day for blocking a fierce shot, that meant a penalty-kick and a second goal for Wealdstone thanks to an assured glide-shot from Sean Cronin.

This drew a strong rally from Cray with twelve minutes remaining, but on a day when the Wands never seemed to get the run of the ball at the crucial moments, Stone's instinctive volley went straight at the 'keeper.

Then in the 88th minute came another "pick that out of the net" unstoppable finish from McGleish, but Cray need not be downhearted after a display that earned applause from the home supporters at the final whistle, in recognition of the spirit and effort shown.
