Burnley Girls & Women 1 - 3 Crewe Alexandra Ladies

This Sunday saw the first team travel to Burnley for one of the biggest games of the season so far. With a squad missing Beth Ragdale and Claire Beresford through injury and illness the Alex ladies had to again call upon the strength and depth of the first team squad to compete against a Burnley side who have beaten fellow title challengers Blackpool Wren Rovers twice and having only lost in the league once so far this season the game promised to be a good one.

The game opened with an unusual slow pace from Crewe as they seemed to have some tired legs from last weekends County Cup game and the heavy pitch made it difficult to get control of the ball. With Burnley playing a direct style of play which got players running beyond the Alex defence Crewe conceded early into the game which instantly put them onto the back-foot. With Kerri Green coming off after a strong challenge Laura Goom came off the bench and helped calm the flustered Alex backline. Crewe managed to get a foothold in the game and created a few clear opportunities with Levi Lander going close after 30 minutes and Megan Booth proving a constant threat on the right wing. The equalising goal game from the ever threatening Lander who latched onto a fumbled ball by the Burnley keeper bringing the teams on equal terms.

After half time Crewe began to take control of the game and before too long Michelle Saunders bullied her way through the midfield and cut in from the right striking the ball with the outside of the foot which curled into the top right hand corner. The game was sealed after Sarah Gill came off the bench and latched onto the end of a Laura Goom free kick sealing the points and pushing the Alex ladies points tally closer to the targeted 50.

Next week see's the first team travel to Wigan Athletic, more details to follow.
