Clanfield 7-0 Cropredy (AET) Saturday, October 27 Oxfordshire Senior Cup, Round 2

Football can be a cruel game and it certainly was that as Cropredy exited the Oxfordshire Senior Cup on Saturday.

After being on top for large spells of the game and having the better chances, one early extra time goal turned into a tide as Clanfield ran out 7-0 winners.

The first half saw Cropredy make a confident start to the game, more than matching their step 6 opponents and enjoying some good spells in the final third. Both sides had good early chances to open the scoring in the first half, Cropredy's came after the referee awarded an indirect free kick for a backpass - which was dubious to say the least. The ball was set inside the box and Dan Reeves let fly, however wall stood firm and blocked his effort before Gavin Connor blazed over. Clanfield's chance came soon after, some good work down the left and the Clanfield winger got a shot in that Kurt Fox saved well, Shaun Anderson reacted fastest to just nudge the ball to safety. The effort of the half came from Jack Welch who unleashed a fierce half volley from 30 yards that was destined for the top corner, the home keeper making a great save to tip it round the post.

Clanfield came out and played with more tempo and purpose at the beginning of the second half, which Cropredy matched and limited the home side to only long range efforts. As the half wore on, Cropredy became the dominant side, spending the last 20 mins camped in the Clanfield half looking to get the vital goal that could win the game. Dan Reeves rattled the bar with a free kick from 25 yards and had what looked like a stonewall penalty turned down after beating a couple of Clanfield defenders the box. Cropredy continued to probe down the channels with Jason Tillcock and Jack Welch and Aaron Dineen through the middle, but could not find a way through a dogged Clanfield defence.

The game went to extra time and was over in the first few minutes of the first half. Within 2 minutes of the restart, Clanfield's Nathan Kimber hit a great strike from 25 yards into the bottom corner, worthy of winning any game. Cropredy heads were down and credit to Clanfield they turned the screw quickly to take any hope the away side had away. The second goal arrived a minute later, a tidy finish into the bottom corner before a fortunate third after Kurt Fox was fouled from a corner, the referee disagreed, the goal stood and Fox picked up a yellow for the protest. The fourth was from the spot after a handball was given from a free kick. Tired legs and players pushing to try and get a couple of goals back lead to three more break away goals for the home side taking the score to 7 after extra time.

A disappointing end to what was a great 90 minute performance from Cropredy, lots of positives from the tie - we wish Clanfield all the best in the 3rd round.

Cropredy now turn attentions back to the Oxfordshire Senior League as they host Freeland at Williamscot Road on Saturday.
