Cobras go down to East
Cobras made the short trip to Leigh to play at the excellent Leigh sporting Village.
East kicked off and began well making good meters into the Crosfield half in the first set of six. One the last tackle the try was disallowed at the East player knocked the ball on short of the line. Cobras remembered what they had been practicing in training and from their own line ran three scoots from dummy half which brought good progress until a pass was dropped with half way in sight. From the scrum the East #9 ran the ball towards the Cobras line but was stopped with a strong goal line tackle which drew applause from the spectators. The ball was moved one pass out and the big #8 crashed over through the middle for a try 4-0, conversion kicked 6-0.
Cobras restarted their forwards responded to the challenge. Strong drives from Marcus (2), AJ and Taylor put Cobras well inside the East half and looking to score. On the last tackle Myler ran at the line and grubbed behind for a chasing Taylor to score! Good reward from the practice organised in training by Coach Hill. 6-4, Conversion by Lewis Hall 6-6. Game on!
From the restart Cobras recent weakness of not moving forward quickly and missing one on ones was evident as strong running by the East forwards and a missed tackle on the wing allowed an immediate response, try 10-6, conversion kicked 12-6.
Following the restart, two good individual runs from Spence got the Cobras moving but a unforced when attempting a drop off stopped the momentum. Another missed one had East attacking the wing and a penalty by the ref helped them to start their next six on the cobras line. Another penalty and a well worked move had East #12 running an angle back inside whilst three Cobras defenders were napping try, conversion kicked 18-6.
Another turn over by Cobras from the restart and subsequent missed tackles and strong running had the East #6 scoring on the last tackle. The Cobras defence waited for a kick and #6 ran forward and placed the ball over the line, try 22-6, conversion 24-6.
More determined running from Marcus, Taylor and AJ and two quick penalties for high tackles on Myler and AJ has Cobras on the attack. Louis Rossyln, thinking faster than all others tapped quickly and with a hand off, used all of his strength to fall over the line, try, 24-10, conversion kicked by Myler 24-12.
A lucky escape for the Cobras was next to happen when an East try was questionably disallowed try for a foot in touch. The final try for the half was scored by East on the stroke of half time 28-12, goal 30-12.
Second Half
East kicked off and the ball was allowed to bounce twice with Myler taking the ball and being trapped in goal. East moved the ball across the pitch and a clear knock on was not given. On the next tackle the #6 ran across the defensive line and dropped the ball over the try line which was given by the referee - shocking! 34-12, goal 36-12.
Another strong run from Marcus made 40 metres with five tackles to follow. From the play of the ball quick thinking from Hally had him diving over the line unopposed for a try which was successfully converted by Ollie Hill 36-18.
From the kick off the missed one of one tackles from the first half returned. 3 different players missed 5 tackles and an angled run back inside by the scrum half had East on the Cobras line again. The dummy half scooted and looked to have been stopped on the line and on his back but the try was awarded by the referee 40-18, goal 42-18.
A close shave followed on the next set for the Cobras when the ball was dropped when the player went over the line. A back to back set by Cobras from a knock on from a kick return by East supported by good drives from AJ and Taylor resulted in a fine try from Spencer Rudd who jinking his way past the defensive line for a try under the post. 42-22 which was converted by Louis Rossyln 42-24.
Cobras were grinding their way back into the match and good goal line defence stopped East twice from scoring. A long ball from Myler put Hally between a two men and a strong 50 metre run to the line was stopped just short when a terrific cover tackle bundled Lewis into touch. The final East try was scored in the corner after a determined run and four missed tackles 46-24, conversion missed.
Cobras has the final say on the next set when after testing the line early in the tackle count Myler shimmied and stretched out to place the ball on the try line 46-28, conversion missed.
