Crostyx ladies first team were cutting it to the wire this season. With five teams being relegated out of the 12 in the division it has meant no-one has been safe all season. A successful 4 – 0 win against Havering on Wednesday night was a great step to the campaign of staying up.
Twas the last day of the league it was a sunny delight, Crostyx knew that they needed to fight. As Letchworth approached, competitive, ready to play, Crostyx knew they had the skills to be the winners of the day.
The first ten minutes of the game saw Crostyx bringing the game to Letchworth and causing all sorts of trouble. A number of free hits in the Letchworth half and short corners did a lot to pile on the pressure. A swift free hit taken in the Letchworth 25 from Edith Galliers, reached captain Vicki Berrill at the top of the D. A wonderfully smooth pass in to Ciara Newell saw a beautiful strike on goal and Crostyx taking an early lead. Letchworth responded and Crostyx held them off with some solid defending from Kirsty Breeze and Lisa Dennett, but the visitors broke through on a quick break to net the equaliser, showing that the game was not going to be an easy win.
Crostyx kept their heads and continued to drive the lines causing havoc with the Letchworth forwards. A lucky short corner was won by Letchworth but their drag flick was no match for Rosie Batchelor who nonchalantly tipped it over the bar. The first half finished with it all to play for.
An inspiring team talk brought a tear to the even the strongest players eyes. Al Pacino would have been impressed with the pressure and determination that Crostyx showed in the group love of half time. “Win lose or draw” Crostyx were going to work their purple asses off to win the game.
The second half saw some sustained pressure from Crostyx. Excellent transition play from Anna Feldman created space on the pitch and provided the opportunities for Crostyx to continue their attack. Team cohesion combined with a sharp cutting edge allowed ‘Styx to take the game to Letchworth. Anna found Ciara high up the pitch allowing Ciara to swiftly eliminate several Letchworth players. With a number of opportunities available to her, Ciara finished hard to take Crostyx in front with a 2 -1 lead. Laura Beaton was left on the sidelines open mouthed and in awe at the silky skills shown, a game changer for Crostyx.
Determined to maintain the victory Crostyx pushed on, turning Letchworth over high up the pitch and winning a number of short corners. The midfield linked the play and the continued work rate of the forwards saw some beautiful runs. The final Crostyx short corner saw Alys Hackett’s drag-flick saved, prompting an unusual duck and cover manoeuvre from Kat Hawes, who seemed to be having flashbacks from Nam as the ball headed in her direction – one dick of the day vote right there. Despite the continued pressure the final score line saw no more goals but a well deserved win for Crostyx – side line supporters were heard to call the girls nothing short of sensational.
