AT LAST, A WORD OF WISDOM ON PLAYER'S PAY.

Kevin Watson, manager of Chatham Town, who play in the Ryman Isthmian League, North Division, has spoken about players moving on for more money.

The grass still has to be cut.
Chatham Town currently sit in twelfth position in the table but have probably achieved a level or performance that not many thought possible at the start of the season.

This has been achieved because Watson has worked hard, with his young players, to fashion a squad that can compete at this level, without having the biggest playing budget to spend.

Watson has urged his in-form players, who have been on a great run in the league, to think carefully and look at the bigger picture before deciding whether to take the greater riches other clubs can offer.

Boss Watson is expecting interest from other clubs for his players and said, "You have a bit of success and people think they can come in and take your players. However, we want to keep a lot of the players and build on the squad we already have.

“Part of the reason they are doing well individually is a result of other players in the team and they need to recognise that.

“Money’s a big part of non-league football and some teams are well resourced but that doesn’t always guarantee success.

“Players can’t rely on football money because there are too many variables and things can go wrong. They need to get themselves a day job that pays the wages because if you start relying on football money, it puts you under pressure.”

Many of you who read this website regularly will know that if football at this level is to survive, then paying ridiculous amounts to players has to stop, otherwise there will be no one left to pay them anything.

Everyone knows clubs at Ryman Isthmian League level do pay their players, whether they protest otherwise or not and whether they should or shouldn't has been debated many times.

Players though should think long and hard before moving clubs for the lure of greater riches. Of course they have to give up time as there is a lot of travelling, another subject for a future item, that's regionalisation, but players should not get used to the money they get from football to live on.

At best, it should be considered a bonus, and if the money becomes unavailable, as a lot of players are going to find out this summer, then their family life is not affected.

Relying on your football money to pay bills is just the same as a regular employee relying on any overtime pay he earns to live, it's a recipe for disaster because you can get in to heaps of problems when it's not there.

Believe me, I've been there, done that and to use a football term, paid the penalty.
