Cullompton 23 Camborne 31

This match was ultimately decided by the visitors pack whose tactics in the loose through the use of the rolling maul overcame a spirited home side in a game where the lead changed hands three times, five players collected a yellow card and the referee awarded two penalty tries. There was a good crowd in attendance at Stafford Park and the neutral observer was treated to a fine display of committed play by both sides. With ten minutes of normal time left Cully were looking good for four points but by the end of the eigth minute of injury time they collected nothing after a Camborne revival carried the visitors to a five point bonus win.
Cully started the game confidently and with the scrum looking strong gained a penalty in the third minute. Ross Toms effort fell just short however and it was the visitors No 8 Roberts who opened the scoring on 11mins when he ran back a clearing kick to score in the corner. The conversion attempt failed and Cully were unlucky not to score when Tom Harrold broke through to the posts but could not find Josh Barrett with his offload. Toms reduced the arrears with a penalty on fifteen minutes. Cully were struggling to secure possession at the lineout however and when the visitors set up a rolling maul which took play from the twenty two to the try line skipper Sam Harris took the maul down and earned himself a yellow card and the opposition a try. Mankee added the extras for a 12-3 lead. Cully upped their work rate in his absence and a second Toms penalty made it 6-12. On his return to the field Cully began to use their backs with the possession their pack was gaining in the loose and after winger Jack Stoddart had made a run centre Josh Barrett cut through the defense to score. Toms converted from the touchline for a 13-12 lead. Cully had the defence on the back foot and visiting full back Parma was carded for slowing the release in the loose. Toms kicked the conversion for a half time lead of 16-12.
Camborne scored in the third minute of the second half through Bell from a rolling maul to take a one point lead. Territory and possession were equally shared in a period of the game where Cully won the scrums but lost the lineouts but had the more dangerous backs. Harrold being held up over the line after a strong run through the centre. Following a scrum in front of the Camborne posts Barrett was held up at the line but found Alex Ford in support who touched down. Toms added the conversion for 23-17. Back came Camborne with a series of catch and drives. Paul Surridge was carded for pulling down the maul with ten minutes on the clock. The penalty was despatched to the corner and hooker Bartle scored the try from the catch and drive. Mankee added the extras to make it 24-23. Cully won a penalty from the kick off and replacement Steinleik talked himself into a yellow card. Unfortunately Toms kick was just wide. Injury time was being played and had reached five minutes when Camborne had a succession of scrums on the Cully line. Out half Adam Pearce was yellow carded for kicking the ball from the scrum and a second penalty try awarded. Mankeeā€™s conversion made it 23-31. A final Cully attack gained a penalty and with no time left to kick to the corner Toms attempted to land a point saving penalty with the last kick of the match. The ball went wide to deny the home side of any points in a game in which they had looked certain to obtain at least one but which provided the supporters of both sides with a spectacle well worth the admission price.
