History - History 1
The two principal founding members were thought to be Ian Cameron & Robert Smith, father of the late Bobo Smith.
1893
The club's first recorded match took place on the 2nd September 1893 against Tanfield Club.
The game resulted in a win for Cults. Cults played two further games that year beating Enterprise & Tanfield again. For the next three years Cults continued to play friendlies against various clubs participating in the Cricket Association leagues. In these seasons Cults played around nine games a season. In these early years the mainstays of the team were the Davidsons, both father & son.
1897 to 1899
In 1897 Cults joined the Junior league & then the following year joined the Aberdeenshire Cricket Association as a full member. The first season did not start to well as only one league game was won out of eight & were knocked out of the Bon Accord Cup in the first round.
1900 to 1905
Cults continued this pattern from 1900 to 1905 with the only bright spot being a Bon Accord Cup semi final appearance where they lost to Thistle.
1906 to 1909
In this season, 1906, Cults were able to field two teams entering both the Aberdeenshire & Bon Accord cups. This continued without success until 1909 by which time only one team was participating. The only success over this period was an individual success by H.Cook who won the bowling trophy in 1908. The earliest known scorecard was Cults versus Brechin played at Nursery Park, Brechin on the 7th May 1906.
1910 to 1926
Unfortunately there are no records of further participation until 1926 when the club entered a team in Grade III and the Reid Cup. In this season Cults scratched in the Cup & won only two league games out of nine.
1927 to 1935
Again, the club appears to have gone into hibernation until the enthusiastic leadership of Larry Kinnaird & Doug Calder it re-formed to enter Grade III & the Reid Cup. This season proved very successful as Cults won ten games out of thirteen to finish second in the league.
The following three seasons provided little success.
The 1935 season was the first the club kept full records. These showed that top run scorers were F.Anderson & H.Stroud with 109 & 107 runs respectively & J.Hill & Doug Calder being the top bowlers with 39 & 33 wickets respectively.
1936 to 1937
The 1936 season was little better winning only two league games out of ten. Doug Calder had a great all round season topping the batting with 155 runs & the bowling with 38 wickets.
In 1937 the club finished second in the league & this was to be their springboard for success.
1938 to 1945
In 1938 Cults finally won their first honours as they won the League & the Reid Cup beating Windsor in the final. The success continued as they won the Bon Accord Cup at the first time of asking. In the first round two club records were broken. The first being the highest team total of 233 & the highest individual score as Bob Symon scored the clubs first century. In the final Cults defended 59 as they put Hendersons out for 47. Cults were enjoying their new found success & were producing some fine batsmen in Doug Calder, Bob Symon & Larry Kinnaird & fine bowlers in Donald Yeats (Snr.) & Jack Symon. Cults played on without any further success until the war intervened. Cults did participate in the "War League" in 1940 & 1941 but without any success.
1946 to 1952
Cults began the after war years with essentially the Pre-War line up. Larry Kinnaird, Ronnie Mitchell, Jim Pirie, Donald Yeats (Snr), Doug Calder, Harold Binnie, Hoot Gibson, E.Crawford, Jim Calder, Bob Mowat & Jock MacDougall were all there. In the first three years Cults performed well by winning the Bon Accord Cup twice & in 1948 won they won the Grade II championship to gain promotion to Grade I. That season Cults finished level on points with CF Wilsons, so a playoff was required. Cults defended a modest 83 bowling out Wilsons for 55 with Donald Yeats (Snr) & Jack Symon taking three & six wickets respectively. Cults struggled early on in Grade I & were eventually relegated to Grade II in 1951 along with Peterhead. On a brighter note, Bob Thomson won the Grade I bowling averages in his first full season, a great performance.
Grade II held no fears for Cults as they romped to the title & won the Bon Accord Cup. Donald Yeats (Snr) took 69 wickets during this season including a remarkable nine five wicket hauls. Peter Anderson backed Donald up well by taking 54 wickets. In this year Cults President, Bob Thomson presented the Grades with the Thompson Shield which was to be presented in future years to any club in the Grades which completed the league & cup double.
