1. History 1

Following the traditional end of season Old boys versus Cumnock Academy 1st XV games, the subject of forming a local rugby club was always discussed, but the difficulty was in finding a pitch and changing rooms.

In October 1961 Ronnie Houston and Allan Davidson placed an advert in the Cumnock Chronicle inviting all those interested in forming a rugby club in Cumnock to attend a meeting at the Dumfries Arms Hotel on the 6th of October.

Ronnie and Allan, with the help of Bill Morrison, had obtained assurance from the headmaster of St Convals School that he would allow the school changing rooms to be made available to the rugby club. The Ayr County Council Borough Surveyor had also agreed to allow the regular use of the rugby pitches at Broomfield.

Ronnie chaired the Dumfries Arms meeting and with the problems of pitch and changing rooms removed it was proposed and formally carried to form Cumnock Rugby Club. During this meeting Lew Sim was elected President and Chairman of the following committee:-

Ronnie Houston (vice president/vice captain), Allan Davidson (secretary/treasurer), Bill Cooper (captain), Adam Blair, Robin Armour, Harry Scott and Jim Donaldson.

The club's first match was against Ayr 2nd XV on 8th December 1961, when the team was;-
D. Johnstone, W. Lammie, W. Morrison, W. Cooper, A. Stirling, A. Blackwood, A. Davidson, F. Little, S. Stobie, A. Blair, J McAtee, B. Gunn, J. Jenkins, K. Blair and R. Houston

Cumnock won handsomely.
