The Cougars under 15’s travelled down to a very cold and damp Dumfries looking for some game time that has been hard to find due to the bad weather throughout the season. One man short due to the school holidays Dumfries kindly loaned Cumnock a player to bring both teams up to full strength.
The game started in a bitter wind and flurries of snow, this was never going to be a day for good handling and unfortunately for Cumnock they were the first to make a mistake that allowed a Dumfries player to pounce on a loose ball and kick through for the first score. However, the early score didn’t affect the Cougars and they quickly got themselves back in the game. The game was scrappy at times due to the conditions and cold hands but here was plenty of action that kept the scores ticking over till half time when Dumfries led 24 – 12.
Early in the second half a couple of injuries to both teams reduce the numbers to 14 a side. Throughout the game the Dumfries forwards were the sharper of the two teams but Cumnock battled away at the breakdowns and when they did get the ball out to their backs Dumfries struggled to keep up with their pace. Again both teams traded tries but by now the conditions were getting to a tired Cumnock side and they lost a couple of soft late tries that allowed the score line to flatter the home team.
In the end Dumfries dealt with the conditions better and Cumnock were a bit rusty due to lack of games but the coaches were happy with the teams performance and attitude. The team is training well and they will improve with more game time and experience, once they thaw out.
