Cumnock Cougars Micros travelled up to Troon to play the Marr P3’s at a soggy, rain battered Fullarton on Sunday hoping to extend their unbeaten record this season. A number of last minute call-offs and otherwise unavailable players meant we had only 5 players and no subs, and from the start our predominately P2 team were up against it taking on the larger squad of older P3’s.

Our team were; Daniel McKinlay, Sandy Hay, Tyler Wilson, Luke Naismith and Paige Makin, they all looked fantastic in their brand new playing shirts, kindly sponsored by Barr and MacMillan Vets. The Micros were also looking very sharp in their warm up session, with slick passing and good defensive lines in evidence. Some of this shape and composure seemed to disappear when the game started as Marr ran in a number of easy tries. The Micros gradually began to put some good play together, particularly in defence, making Marr work very hard for their remaining tries. Regular brilliant, scything runs from Dan and Tyler opened up the Marr defence with some good support play from the others too, but these weren’t always converted into scores. The tries that were scored were crackers and gave the travelling support something to cheer about. Dan scored 2 and Tyler 1. The team never gave up, though lack of subs and the short-sided game meant they were always going to have to work very hard to try to get back into the game. Marr eventually ran out worthy winners 7-3.

The Micros then enjoyed the warm hospitality of the Marr Clubhouse with some well-deserved hotdogs and juice. They look forward to a return fixture later in the season with a full squad.
