Cumnock Cougars travelled up to Marress, home of Irvine RFC, on Sunday to play against the East Kilbride Micros in distinctly cold and windy conditions. If the weather was on the chilly side the rugby on display was red hot! EK had hoped to bring 12 players – thought were only able to bring 9 - and Cumnock had 14 we decided to play 2 concurrent games of 5 aside. The Cumnock Red team consisted of Sandy Hay, Daniel McKinlay, Adam Karimlar, Max Patrick, Tyler Wilson, and Zain Smith. The Black team consisted of Luke Naismith Kela Johnstone, Willie Garven, Robert McElrea, Harry & Alfie Linden. Paige Makin and Lewis Young kindly volunteered to help out EK and play for them.

The black team, consisting of some of our youngest players and some others who have played in only a couple of competitive games as well as some more experienced micros took part in a fast and frantic game that saw loads of tries scored and a great time had by all. The final scoreline was a bit hazy but special mention must go to Kela Johnstone who scored 6 tries!

The red team had a fantastic game against an evenly matched EK side which was tight throughout the 1st half, with some great runs, support play, passing and tackling from both sides. The coaches decided that we should increase the size of the pitch for the 2nd half to open up the game a bit and this proved the difference as Cumock were able to use the full team to put their flyers over the line for a barrow load of tries. Scorers for Cumnock were Zain and Daniel with 3 each and one each for Max and Tyler. CUMNOCK RAN OUT WINNERS 8-6.

For those not playing on Sunday, training continued at Catrine Games Hall (1000-1100). The Micro Section welcomes boys and girls from nursery to P3 for training (P1-3 only for competitive games). If interested contact coach Gordon Hay 07752 902680.
