Cumnock Minis vs Uddingston
Cumnock P5/6 Report by Sharon Adrian
P5/P6 mix for Cumnock against Uddingston P6. First game showed great determination from Cumnock and each try took a lot of strength to push through Uddingston defence. Cumnock kept pressure on Uddingston, with Cumnock showing a strong defence. Unfortunately, half time score showed Uddingston had just crept ahead. The second half saw Cumnock driving forward hard, breeching a strong Uddingston defence. Uddingston had pushed Cumnock right back, with a Cumnock scrum, nearly at Uddingston try line Luke Donald managed to breakaway and score his second try of the game. Final score Cumnock 2-Uddingston 4.
Second game started, and although Cumnock were on the back foot, they came out fighting. From the off, Cumnock were more than levelling the score. Most of the game play was in Uddingston half as Cumnock were constantly on them. Uddingston were finding it very hard to burst through Cumnocks tight defence. Cumnock made some great drives up the park and with good spacing, tackling and passing many tries were scored. Jamie Kennedy manage to score all 6 tries for Cumnock. Leaving the final victory for Cumnock 6-Uddingston 5. As Uddingston were playing with full P6 teams as they didn't have a P5 team we made a mix P5/P6, so of course we were very proud of all the boys who stepped up today, especially as the game differs alot from a P5 level.
Cumnock P4 Report by Mark McMenemy
Todays team consisted of Jasmine, Hamilton, Lauray, Kai, Logan, Nathan, Luke and Ross. In the first game of three, Uddingston started very quickly and Cumnock struggled to cope initially with the pressure from the visitors. Nevertheless Cumnock dug in and started to get in some positive tackles and with strong running from Hamilton and Kai, Cumnock were rewarded with a couple of try's.
The second match was a much tighter game with Cumnock applying more pressure and producing some great tackles from Nathan and Logan. Again Kai managed to get over the oppositions line on a couple of occasions in this game, his second being a great run from his own half following strong defensive play from Cumnock.
The third match saw the visitors increase the pressure on the Cumnock line for large spells of the match, however, Cumnock responded with some resolute defending and again some great tackles coming in from a number of the Cumnock players.
Overall, a positive display from Cumnock against a strong, physical and experienced Uddingston side. The P4's have a number of new players with limited match experience and games like today's will go a long way to improving not only the these newer players but also the whole squad.
Cumnock Primary 4/5 train at Catrine Games Hall on Wednesdays from 7.00pm-8.00pm with Cumnock minis travelling to Whitecraigs, next Sunday.
Cumnock P7 Report by Harry Reilly
Cumnock welcomed Uddingston as visitors to Broomfield last Sunday after a solid performance last week away to Marr. The team started their three game series against the visitors in fine fashion with slick handling and the opening try came in the first few seconds of play. Uddingston however had their own game plan and responded immediately. A to and fro period commenced where a score by one was cancelled out by the other. As this game progressed the home team started to drop off in the defensive duties specifically their tackling which led to a late run of tries against the home side. By the time the final whistle sounded Uddingston had a comfortable 4-7 victory.
After a short lecture from the coaches on the need to close down the opposition and specifically put in the tackles the home side returned to the pitch for game 2. This game saw the Cougars starting to get into their stride and with the words of their coaches ringing in their ears proceeded to display the defensive qualities that this team are capable of. The visitors where clearly not prepared for this new level of physicality as the ‘Nock side took the game to them again and again. With game 2 firmly in the bag it was only a short lapse in concentration that allowed the visitors to cross their line in the dying seconds to avoid the whitewash. Final score 3-1.
The Cougars now had their tails up and as the final game ko’d the boys stepped up to plate again with another solid defensive performance. When Uddingston had the ball tackles were made and the ball was turned over, when the home team had the ball it was fast handling and penetrating rugby. Scores where hard to come by however the home team were not to be outdone and closed out the final game with a hard fought, well-earned 1-0 victory. The series ended in favour of the Cougars 2-1 and as the teams shook hands at the end of the last game the large crowd who had followed the matches gave the teams a hearty round of applause for the efforts that both teams had contributed.
The coaching team commented “This was another step forward for the team today as the game plan which they had worked on during mid-week training was starting to be executed by the team during the match. By sticking to the plan and continuing to improve our tackling there is little doubt that this team can look forward to success in future.”
Scorers on the day where Jamie Kennedy(2), Jamie Drummond, Owen Young(2), Andrew Houston(2), Adam Watt.
The mini Section travels to the Southside of Glasgow to play Whitecraigs on the 11th November. Details for the day will be passed on by coaches during the week. If there are any P7 players who are keen to give rugby a go then come along to training on Wednesday evenings from 1900-2000 on the All-weather pitches at Cumnock Academy.
