Cumnock Minis at Hillhead RFC
Reports by Sharon Adrian, Mark Mcmenemy & Morton Houston
Primary 5 Report by Sharon Adrian
P5 team was Thomas Adrain, Daniel Anderson, Luke Donald, Andrew Dunlop, Lewis Young and M.
Cumnock P5 were unbeaten and again they were raring to go despite the rain they were looking forward to a friendly game at Hillhead RFC ground. Andrew Dunlop was captain for the team and right from the tap Lewis struck out and scored the first of many tries of the day. A great tackle from Daniel, and Andy managed a pass back to Luke who flew over the try line. The first half seemed an easy run for Cumnock with further tries from Luke (2) and Lewis (3). M flew up the wing and a sliding tackle but couldn't quite stop the Hillhead player in scoring, the first half saw a healthy lead for Cumnock at Hillhead 2 - Cumnock 5. Second half Hillhead put up a much stronger defence and we saw some of the best tackles of the game. Relentless tackles from Cumnock but not always managing to secure the ball. After a good exchange Daniel (1) stole the ball for a well deserved try. Plenty of strong drives through Hillhead's defence were seen from Andy, Daniel and Thomas, gaining good ground, with Cumnock's fast runners quick to take the ball it was a short run over the try line for Lewis (4) and Luke (4). Andy took a great run up the far wing to be hit by a wall of Hillhead defence just a meter away from the try line, Lewis was quick to pick up and pop it over. A great tackle from Luke on the far side resulted in a run up the wing from M (2) scoring a try. The game finished with a strong push through the defence and score from Thomas (1). Final score was probably one of Cumnock Cougars P5 highest ever, finishing at Hillhead 5 - Cumnock 16.
Primary 4 Report by Mark McMenemy
Cumnock P4's travelled to Hillhead and managed to continue with their winning form following on from last week's victory. In the first of two games Cumnock pressed their opponents line quickly right from the start and this allowed them to control large periods of the game. Again there was plenty of strong running and good support play from the whole team, and it was clear they were all keen to get on the ball and drive for the line at any and all opportunity. Cumnock ran out clear winners in the first game with a number of players going over their opponents line, some on a couple of occasions.
The second game was much tighter and Hillhead started to grow in confidence, with this and some sloppy defending from Cumnock allowed Hillhead to break through on a number of times. Nevertheless, Cumnock regrouped and started to find their form again with strong tackles and plenty of willing runners taking the game back to Hillhead. Again the majority of the team went over the Hillhead line in the second game and they eventually took control of the match.
Another great performance from the whole team and it is apparent all the players are continuing to develop and most importantly are enjoying their rugby.
Todays team consisted of Liam Bradely, Hamilton Walsh, Lori Walsh, Nathan Conway, Billy Dalzell & Ross McMenemy.
Primary 7 Report by Morton Houston
Cumnock P7s continued their good form when the visited Glasgow to play Hillhead Jordanhill minis. Whether the game would be on or not was in doubt right up to the day before due to the rain over the last week. The conditions however turned out to be a very good despite being a wee bit on the cold side. Hillhead found themselves a few players down so Cumnock lent them some to even the games.
Cumnock started off at their customary slow pace with some of the players still to wake up properly. They found themselves 3-2 down before the sleep was rubbed from their eyes letting them score twice more for a narrow win in the first game.
In the second game Cumnock started to click and move the ball about much more. This is when they looked at their most dangerous. The forwards drove the ball up the park before the ball was released to the wings resulting in some great scores. This was supplemented by fantastic tackling and cover play. Cumnock were well worth their 4-1 win in this game.
In the last game Cumnock had to fight their hardest as both teams were well matched. Again they played some great rugby moving the ball all over the park. Highlight of the game was the irresistible force of Jamie Drummond coming up against the immovable object of Owen Young. Drummond playing for Hillhead rampaged all over the park whilst Young chopped him down whenever he got the chance. The end result was a narrow 2=1 victory for Cumnock in a tremendously exiting game.
Tries came from Jamie Drummond (3), Owen Young (2), Jamie Kennedy (2), Andrew Houston (2) and Ashley (1).
Coach Billy Ramsay said after the game, “ We were really pleased with how the boys played especially in the 2nd and 3rd games. they are showing real improvement over the last few weeks. There is a lot of good work going in from all the players leading to the scores. Players like Lewis, Dillon, Matt Montgomerie, Jamie Caldwell and Wallace Findlay are putting in some really strong runs whilst fast nippy players like Findlay Robertson, Kieran Murray, Robb Drummond are darting about and distributing the ball. “
Next week: The P6 and P7 teams will be training at Cumnock Academy astro parks from 6:45 to 8:00. All new players are welcome to come along and join in. This is a really good time to start as we have quite a number of new players starting just now.
Cumnock play Whitecraigs home at Broomfield next Sunday. Times will be texted out as usual once confirmed.
