Cumnock mini reports at Carrick
Primary 5 Report by Sharon Adrian
Cumnock Cougars P5 take on Carrick P5.
Cumnock were invited over to Maybole to play Carrick at Carrick Academy. Cumnock were quick off the mark in both games and took some good strong runs. Cumnock kept the pressure up and put in some great tackles scoring an amazing runaway win in the first game Carrick 2 - Cumnock 21.
The second game pushed Cumnock a bit more and they had to fight a bit more for the ball. Exceptional passing back along the line and dummy throws and footwork kept Cumnock at a healthy lead again. Carrick 6 - Cumnock 13.
P5 team players were Thomas Adrain, Luke Donald, Andy Dunlop, Kai Johnstone, Ross Pryce and Lewis Young. Captains today were Andy and Thomas.
The boys really enjoyed the games, it was great to have some good weather, although cold, the sun was shining.
Next week the mini section goes down to Kilmarnock . There is no bus for this game so parents should make their way down to Kilmarnock Rugby Club for 10:20am. If anyone needs a lift cars will be leaving Cumnock RFC at 9:45. Following the game we hope as many players and parents as possible come back to Cumnock RFC to see Scotland play Ireland in the 6 Nations, kick off 2pm.
Primary 6/7 Report by Morton Houston
This week Cumnock travelled to Maybole to play the recently formed Carrick Mini section for the first time. The conditions could not have been more perfect for a good game of rugby. Cumnock formed 2 P6/7 teams to play their Carrick counterparts. All the games were closely contested with many tries from each team. At the end Cumnock managed a draw and 2 wins in the three games played.
Coach Billy Ramsay said after the game, “We were a bit disorganised today as we split our P6 and P7 boys up to make to equal teams. Despite this there was some cracking play with loads of wide passing and off-loading. The players were just back for their first game following the winter shut down it was clear to see that some of the tackling and defensive alignment could do with a wee bit of a brush up. However in attack Cumnock should a lot of skill, flair and pace to score over 20 tries on the day. Highlights of the day included a brilliant solo try from Lucas McCallum, great distribution by Evan Smith and a display of perpetual motion by man of the match Owen Young who tackled everything that moved.”

Primary 4 Report by Mark McMenemy
The team that travelled to Maybole to play against Carrick consisted of Jasmine Scott, Lori & Hamilton Walsh, Nathan Conway, Connor Smith and Ross McMenemy.
In the first of 2 matches Cumnock found themselves against an older, stronger and experienced Carrick team, nevertheless this did not detract the players from competing. The whole team put in some great tackles and made Carrick work for every ball, there was also strong running from a number of the players and Cumnock took the game to Carrick at every opportunity. Cumnock managed to go over the line on a number of occasions in the first game and could have added to their tally had players realised they were over Carrick's line.
In a more evenly contested second match Cumnock took the game to Carrick straight from the first whistle and the whole team produced some great rugby with the majority of them going over their opponents line on a number of occasions. There was strong tackles being made all over the park; Nathan and Connor were not giving Carrick any respite and were quick to attack at all opportunities with the rest of the team willing to muck in and fight for everything. There were positive, attacking runs from Jasmine, Lori, Ross and Hamilton as always was willing to get forward throughout the both games.
Overall a great day out for the P4's, the first match was tough however, the whole team competed well and were not intimidated by a more physical opposition. In the second match they took the game to Carrick and all of the team participated, played well and most importantly looked as if they were enjoying themselves.
It was the first outing for a considerable period for the team and today will further benefit their development and hopefully stand them in good stead for the rest of the season.
