Cumnock Rugby Football Club and East Ayrshire have settled on a temporary solution for training and pitches.

A small team of club representatives have been meeting with the Council over the last year. After much negotiation, the following provisions have been agreed.

There will be two large synthetic floodlit pitches located on the bottom field of Broomfield suitable for rugby and football. The Council are committed to constructing these first to ensure minimum disruption to the club. It is expected the pitches will be ready to play on by February next year, although lighting may not be in place by then.

There will also be two "showpiece" grass pitches on the south side of the river once the old academy is demolished. One of the pitches will be exclusively for rugby another for football. Since construction of these can only begin after the new school is constructed and the old academy demolished it will be at least three years before they can be used.

Final planning permission will be decided in April and if approved construction will begin in July whereupon the whole site will be fenced off. There is informal agreement that the area immediately outside the club, used for children's rugby will not be fenced off. A final decision on this will be confirmed after planning permission has been agreed.

The Council have agreed to provide alternative pitches during construction. Two football pitches beside Netherthird Primary School will be converted for rugby at a considerable cost to the Council. This will also include free use of the changing facilities located there, plus additional separate temporary changing facilities for children. As the grass pitches to be constructed on the old academy ground will not be ready for at least three years the Council have agreed to maintain the Netherthird pitches for up to four years. Although it is noted that if the synthetic pitches are ready on time we will only miss two thirds of a season at Broomfield.

Plans are in place to organise a training programme for next year that could include the facilities at Townhead Park, the synthetic pitch at Cumnock Academy, other facilities in the area and the grass area beside the club. Netherthird will probably only be used to play actual games on, to preserve the pitches.

A Gantt chart (timelines for all work stages) is located on the wall of the club foyer as well as a drawing of the site.

Anyone wishing further clarification can contact Donald McVicar, Morton Houston, Jim Morrison or Harry Reilly at the clubhouse.
