On a day more suited to Cricket and sun bathing Cumnock 2nd XV welcomed Dalziel 3rd to Broomfield. It was a unfamiliar looking Cumnock team due to injury and unavailability. The visitors kicked off and went on the attack producing some good driving rucks which came to nothing thanks to some resolute defence from the home side. This frustated Dalziel, causing them to make frequent mistackes. Both sides were trying to play flowing rugby and it was the visitors who made the intial breakthrough from a ruck as quick ball from the scrum half to the stand off caught the home defence flat footed. A superb miss pass to the winger allowed him carve through the defence to open the scoring. The conversion was successful and the vistors lead 7-0. Cumnock were rewarded with a penalty which was converted by Finlay Hamilton and this brought the score to 3 - 7. As the home side tried to get back into the game they were continually repelled by the visitor's defence. Half time came with both sides unable to get a stranglehold on the game.
Early in the 2nd half Finlay Hamilton had a chance to reduce the deficit, but his penalty attempt drifted just wide. The visitors began to ring the changes as the home side started to tire and they ran in a further 2 tries one of which was converted, stretching their lead to 19-3. Cumnock continued to press for the try that their efforts deserved and were rewarded with a score in the final minute as Rab Donald
crashed over from a short penalty. The conversion was missed and the referee blew for full time just after.
This was a tremendous effort by the home side given that we had players playing their first evergame along with Greg Hamilton playing only his second game of the season and Sean Brown playing for the first time in 3 years.
Man of the match was Finlay Hamilton for his all round perormance.
Next week the 2nds travel to play Garnock in the last game of the season.
