Cumnock 67 Glasgow East 7
CUMNOCK posted a convincing win over Glasgow East in a try-fest at Broomfield.
Report by David Kerr
The team put a disrupted last few weeks behind them and ran up a big score against the bottom of the table side, bursting into life early on with Rab Donald crashing over from a quick tap penalty.
The last few weeks have been disrupted by international matches and opposition call-offs so there were signs of rustiness in the Cumnock hands.
However, this didn't stop them attacking the Glasgow East line and centre Jason Robb crossed for the second try after patient build up play from the forwards.
There was some good play on show from the Cumnock ranks, with the scrum anchored by Graham Montgomery and Kevin Brady proving an especially good source of possession.
The bonus point was wrapped up with quick fire tries from Martin Thomson and Findlay Hamilton, both coming after the ball was thrown wide.
Unfortunately Cumnock's kicking was not as accurate as their eye for the try line and it meant they weren't able to build up as big a score as they might of hoped.
Cumnock kept on the pressure and added to the score line with a further try for Donald and a first try for Adam Gilbert who broke past his opposite number for a try in the corner.
There was no let up for Glasgow East who lost a number of players to injury in the first half, denting their hopes still further.
There was some good link up play amongst the forwards with Jamie Hodge and Sean Fulton punching holes but it was out wide that Cumnock were making the breaks and they managed to cross for another score from Thomson out wide.
Prop Montgomery assumed kicking duties and confidently knocked the conversion over from the touch-line.
However, he somehow managed to miss from in front of the posts moments later after Campbell Reid had crossed the line for a score straight from a scrum.
Due to more injuries Cumnock lent Colin Malcolm to the away team for the second half to keep the game going.
Cumnock continued to dominate possession and territory but were perhaps slightly guilty of white line fever at times leading to a few opportunities being passed up.
The home coaches rotated the bench with Andy McCrorie and Steven Lowrie getting a chance to make their mark in the front row while James Gibbs was given a run in the second row.
Cumnock continued to rattle in the tries with Donald wrapping up his hat trick and Reid going over again.
Gilbert also crossed for a second and also assumed kick duties, adding a few extra points to the tally.
It was encouraging to see most of the tries being scored out wide by the backs, building on solid work from the pack with Jamie Thomson punching holes.
Hamilton added another try after being sent into space by a long pass from Robb before probably the most popular score from scrum half Pete Berrett, touching down from close range for his first try in Cumnock colours.
Glasgow East managed to grab a consolation after their centre intercepted a loose pass and this signalled the end of a comfortable win for the Broomfield team.
This proved a one-sided match but Cumnock are now looking ahead to a vital clash against fellow promotion hopefuls Moffat in two weeks time.
Man of the match was Cumnock captain Campbell Reid.
Team: Brady, Miller, Montgomery, Hodge, Fulton, J.Thomson, Kerr, Reid, Berrett, Hamilton, Donald, Robb, Gilbert, M.Thomson.
Bench: McCrorie, Gibbs, Lowrie
