Dumfries 3XV 7 - 54 Cumnock 2XV
CUMNOCK'S second team hit the ground running with a comfortable win away to Dumfries.
The coaches took the opportunity to mix the team up with second team regulars and a few first team players being tried in different positions.
There was also a return to action for perennial seconds skipper Kenny Barr and veteran forward Danny McLaren, who answered a late call up after the team had been left low on numbers at short notice.
Dumfries fielded a huge team and things looked ominous off the kick off when they gathered and drove forward slowly and steadily. However, the Cumnock defence was equal to the challenge and eventually a pass went loose and the ball was cleared up the field.
Cumnock went on the offensive and soon found a breakthrough, after a jinking run from Andrew Watt almost yielded a try but the winger was hauled down short. Graham Montgomery was on hand to pick up and do the rest of the work, bulldozing over from short range.
This got Cumnock's tails up and they set about adding to their advantage. A tricky swirling wind made handling difficult but this did not seem to affect Findlay Hamilton at full back who was solid under the high ball and dangerous when he came into the line. It was the youngster who scored Cumnock's second when he finished a crisp handling move from his backline.
Cumnock looked to have added another score moments later after centre David Kerr broke from inside his own half and headed for the line. He was tap tackled metres from the line but regained his footing and touched down but the referee called play back for a penalty after deeming that Kerr had been held in the tackle. However, this did not put Cumnock off and they quickly scored again through Martin Thomson dived over in the corner.
Cumnock continued to shut out Dumfries with the irrepressible Rory Boswell putting in a number of big hits, while James Gibbs caused problems both in attack and defence.
Cumnock's forwards added another score through a powerful driving maul, which was finished off by the alert Montgomery.
Kevin Brady then added his first of the season with a powerful run down the touchline to dot down in the corner.
Cumnock kept the tempo up in the second half with livewire scrum-half Pete Berrett leading the charge. However, some over confident play from Cumnock meant a lot of dropped balls from handling errors, slowing their progress.
The Broomfield side were still well on top though, with Jamie Thomson especially influential from the back row.
It was Martin Thomson who was next on the scorecard though after powerful running from winger Jayson McMillan opened a space for the stand-off. However, McMillan's goal-kicking skills seemed to have deserted him, completely missing the ball with an attempted drop kick.
The seconds kept the hard work up and were soon rewarded moments later when Findlay Hamilton crossed for the second of his tries after side stepping about three defenders on his way to the line.
David Kerr then added another after a massive gap opened up allowing an easy finish.
Jamie Thomson had been a thorn in the side of the defence all day and finally got a deserved touch down after a neat inside ball from Martin Thomson released into space and he powered past the full back with a crunching hand-off.
Dumfries to their credit kept at it and eventually got a reward for their efforts after they finally managed to make space after retaining possession for countless phases and driving over.
However, Cumnock were to have the last laugh through Andy McCrorie who ran a good supporting line to take him over after good interplay between Jamie Thomson and David Kerr.
The game ended with Dumfries on the hunt for a second try but the solid Cumnock defence repelled them and they had to make do with just the one.
