This was the first time a Cumnock side had been in action since the beginning of November and the game had the feeling of a pre-season match as the team tried to find their rhythm.
After a scrappy start, Cumnock seized the initiative, with the forwards taking their side close to the line.
With space at a premium on a narrow pitch, stand-off Martin Thomson took the direct approach and drove straight through a tackler to score the first try. paul miller was on target with the conversion.
This settled Cumnock into the game and they started to control possession, with veteran prop Bobby Horton more than holding his own in the scrum.
Cumnock's defence was also solid with Findlay Hamilton, playing out of position at scrum-half, well to the fore with a number of good hits.
Cumnock were quickly back on the attack through and broke out from deep before a good handling move released Gregor McMillan for a try.
Cumbernauld then had a decent spell in possession and got close to the Cumnock line, though the defensive line held firm and a crunching hit from Jamie Thomson dislodged the ball, allowing his side to counter attack.
Jayson McMillan hacked ahead and then showed footballing skill to square the bouncing ball to David Kerr who gathered and and shrugged off a tackle to score. Miller was again on target with the kick.
Cumnock were fielding a debutant in John Dallas who did not look out of place, whether played in the back-row or the centre, a switch he made at half-time.
The Broomfield side looked a little ring-rusty with a few unforced errors creeping into their game. Their defence was impressive though, repelling any attempts by Cumbernauld to break the black and red line.
Cumnock were back on the score sheet after quick hands through the back line released John Ferrans into space for a try.
Cumnock were well on top at this stage and worked their way close to the line again before winning a scrum, allowing Jamie Thomson to pick and drive for the line for another Cumnock score, with Miller again adding the extras.
After this free-scoring spell Cumnock seemed to take their foot off the gas and Cumbernauld came close to opening the scoring before knocking on over the line.
However, Cumnock struggled to clear their lines and a pass went loose close to the try-line and a Cumbernauld player was able to get a hand to the bouncing ball first to score his side's first points.
However, Cumnock were not finished and came back at their hosts, with both Jayson McMillan and James Gibbs going close before Adam Gilbert finished the game off with a well taken close range try.
This was a good work out for Cumnock after a long spell of inactivity and both the first and second teams will be hoping to push on with their good form in their respective leagues.
