Curzon Ashton Reserves v Workington Reserves
Ten man Curzon finished off their 2011/2012 season with a convincing 1-0 win over Workington AFC.
Due to the FA Cup an early kick off was arranged so that Workington could get back in time to watch it but after 30 minutes Curzon were down to 10 men after Jermaine Steele retaliated to an elbow to his face, unfortunately neither official saw the elbow on Steele.
Up until then Curzon were comfortable but without stamping their authority onto the game, they were also guilty of giving the ball away too cheaply and lacking that extra man in being too quiet as a team. Their only two good efforts fell to Michael Linney who shot from distance in the 1st minutes without troubling the keeper Lee Jolly and then to Steele after Jordan Wright plays him through with a delightful pass, Steele hesitated and the chance to put Curzon ahead passed.
Then on 30 minutes Steele chasing back to put in a tackle was struck in the mouth by his opponent, Steele unfortunately retaliated and the referee showed a yellow card to the opponent and then the red card to Steele.
If the red card was to change the game then it never materialised Curzon just got stronger and on 35 minutes Jordan Wright put them into the lead with a great strike from the right hand side of the box.
In the second half Curzon, having made two changes at half time completely dominated the game and you would been forgiven if you thought that it was Workington with the 10 men, Thomas Keegan got onto the end of a good cross from Nathan Martin on the left, but he could only scuff his shot wide and then Curzon had the ball in the net after a cross, this time from the right and Ben Shawcross which found Linney at the back post but his headed goal was ruled offside which was very questionable.
With Workington reduced to having only long range efforts on the Curzon goal Curzon seen the half out with ease and enjoyed some great passing football which started from the back and through midfield and if the finishes matched the passing then they should have won the game by a much bigger margin. In the final 5 minutes Curzon should have at least got a second, firstly following good interplay with Linney and Harry Odell on the edge of the box only to see Linney’s shot hit the crossbar then Odell broke into space behind Workington’s defence and with only the keeper to beat he dragged his shot wide.
But a good victory and a great way to finish off what was a good season.
