Farsley AFC v Curzon Ashton FC Match Report
If Curzon are to be involved in this season's promotion battle they will have to find a ruthless streak, and quickly, as they let slip another two points by conceding a stoppage time goal for the second time in a week.
The game began well for Curzon with Lee Blackshaw's reverse pass being lashed home by Tony Evans but he offside flag was up and the effort ruled out.
Curzon were soon in control of the post and Woodford and Blackshaw combined to allow Walker to put in a low cross but with Farsley bodies on the line Curzon were unable to force the ball home at the far post. A minute later a ball into Kris Dennis on the edge of the box saw the Curzon striker control and whip off an instant shot which caught Morgan by surprise, the ball hitting the keeper on the chest and bouncing for a corner. The flag kick was taken short to Cook who sent in a curling effort which flew over the angle.
The pressure intensified and Blackshaw passed to Evans in the box, but after turning away from a defender and the keeper who were closing him down, Evans stabbed his shot the wrong side of the post. It seemed only a matter of time before Curzon made the breakthrough but the game changed in the 24th minute when Farsley's Gareth Grant was sent off for elbowing Simon Lakeland as the players jostled for position waiting for a free kick.
The incident suddenly sparked Farsley into life and despite being a man short, they began to dictate play and Curzon began to be pushed by the home sides attacks. Their best chance fell to Adam Priestly who intercepted a poor midfield pass and went for goal, evading two challenges before firing wildly wide if the goal in his sights. On the half hour Ollerenshaw was forced into his first save of the game, denying Ryan Watson and they had another chance from a free kick, an incident which earned Blackshaw a booking, but the effort went harmlessly over the bar.
In between Curzon had a second effort ruled out for offside in a rare foray into the Farsley half, but they took the lead a minute from the interval when a spell of sustained pressure saw them score. A ball from Dennis to Evans saw the keeper forced into a great save. Farsley scrambled the ball clear but the ball was won on the right hand side and fed to Sam Walker. Morgan got a hand to his effort but the ball trickled over the line to put Curzon in a great position as the half time whistle approached.
However, the team talk was changed when Stuart Cook was shown a straight red card for a rash tackle in the centre circle seconds from the break, so Curzon turned round with a goal advantage but with equal numbers on the field.
Curzon reorganised by dropping Dennis into midfield, leaving Tony Evans as a lone striker but Farsley responded by playing with a three man defence but the changes didn't prevent Curzon from making chances and they almost increased the lead six minutes into the second half. Dennis crossed from the left and Evans looked to have a simple chance to nod home but a defender got a touch, deflecting the ball onto Evans who was unable to adjust his position and the ball bounced off him and wide for a goal kick.
On 53 minutes Farsley were handed the chance to equalise as a soft penalty was awarded but Matt Dempsey lent back and his kick was blasted miles over the bar to end in the car park.
Connor Hampson was lucky to stay on the pitch as he rugby tackled a Farsley player on the half way line as Farsley broke in the 58th minute, the referee opting to only caution the Curzon full back, possibly because of the distance away from goal.
Both sides were looking to score, but the best chances were falling to Curzon. Kris Dennis got on the end of a Walker free kick but his effort lacked power and Morgan saved and then Farsley gave the ball away and Walker quickly sent Evans racing down the middle but his shot from the edge of the box saw Morgan make another save and Morgan rescued his side again, saving twice from Evans 15 minutes from the end after Evans had been presented with a one on one situation.
Farsley had hardly posed any kind of threat on goal, despite having a fair share of possession but they hit Curzon with a sucker punch deep in stoppage time. A Curzon attack broke down on the edge of the Farsley box and they attacked down their right, the ball being fed to Sam Robinson who evaded a challenge on the edge of the box before arrowing a shot into the bottom corner.
