DMPRFC 32 v CINDERFORD RFC 24

DMPRFC secured their first win in National League 1, with victory over a workman-like Cinderford RFC, at the Northern Echo Arena.

Tries by WING Callum MACKENZIE, Ollie HODGSON and a brace from skipper Cameron MITCHELL, together with 3 conversions, a penalty and a drop goal from the boot of fly half Garry LAW, were enough to persevere against the visitors, who scored 4 tries of their own.
The lights were on early at the Arena, with dismal skies overhead, but the rugby on show from both sides was compelling to watch, with a mixture of decent tries, big hits, open play and plenty of good to watch effort from both teams.

Cinderford RFC were hampered ‘early doors’ when their fly half received a yellow card for killing the ball in the ‘red zone’, from an early onslaught by the home side.

This ultimately led to DMPRFC’s opening try, when the ball was flung all the way across an attacking back line, finding winger Callum MACKENZIE on the overlap to squeeze into the corner (5 – 0). The conversion was close from Garry LAW, but failed to dissect the uprights, although he was to have greater success later in the game.
The response from the visitors was almost immediate, with a similarly fashioned try for the Cinderford RFC left wing (5 – 5), which also remained unconverted.

An unfortunate clash of heads between DMPRFC wing Tom KILL and his skipper Cameron MITCHELL caused a lack of numbers in the home defence and a visiting prop easily exploited the weakness, dotting down between the posts (5 – 10). The conversion was easy (5 – 12).

The first of Cameron MITCHELL’s brace arrived at this stage, when from a lineout on the halfway, the ball found its way to Garry LAW, who broke through the first defender, offloading sweetly to Tom HODGSON, who checked and deftly tricked another defender with sleight of hand skills, passing behind his back to a grateful MITCHELL, who waltzed in between the posts (10 – 12). Garry LAW levelled the scores with the extras (12 – 12).

DMPRFC had the upper hand at scrum time and the lineout was working proficiently.

Home No.8 Ollie HODGSON added another (17 – 12), from the base of a scrum and Garry LAW put DMPRFC ahead (19 – 12).
However, if DMPRFC thought they were taking a converted score lead into oranges, they were mistaken, as some sloppy defence allowed the visiting No.8 to charge down a kick out of defence, which he followed up to score (19 – 17).

At the interval, both sides made their way back to the changing rooms, to ponder some missed chances and be given the opportunity of rectifying plenty of mistakes that had littered the first half.

After the break, it was Cameron MITCHELL who scored DMPRFC’s fourth and bonus point try, after a good break out of defence by the always elusive home full back Henry ROBINSON, saw his skipper in support and dot the ball down between the posts (24 – 17). The extras were easy from Garry LAW (26 – 17).

The yellow carding of home lock Chris CAMPBELL coincided with another try for Cinderford RFC, for their try bonus point, which was converted (26 – 24).

This was the closest Cinderford RFC came after that, as the home side dominated the set pieces, piling the pressure on the visitors in their attempts to find more tries.

During a DMPRFC break, a visiting prop also received a yellow card for a high tackle on Henry ROBINSON.

Garry LAW added a drop goal and a penalty to allow DMPRFC to run out winners in the end (32 – 24).
