Following the snow of the previous week the conditions where good and it was relatively mild. This was the first time these two sides had played against each other this season as the away fixture was postponed due to the park house pitch being frozen.

With a record number of 4th team regulars unavailable the saints turned to their 5th team brethren for help and fortunately for the 4’s the Sinners boys more than stepped up. It does help that players like Gubby, Paul Dane and Moony have played the vast majority of their rugby at 1st team level and the class of the 5th team boys shone through.

The game itself was played in a great spirit and was a tough and physical affair. Fair play to Park House as their performance did not reflect their mid-table league position. Their 10 / 12 axis was especially useful and without some excellent defensive work by Barker and Dane darts would have been on the wrong end of a big score.

A few points worthy of mention…

1) the Darts pack dominating the set piece taking a number of balls against the head in the scrum and controlling the lineout from the off. The line out and maul where a huge attacking threat but unfortunately a few too many unforced errors meant we did not take full advantage of this attacking tool.

2) The darts defence was excellent a really gutsy performance for 70 mins, with tired legs on old boys showing in the final 10 mins.

3) Stand out performances from John O’Brien (was everywhere and tireless in defense), Paul Brown (big carries, aggressive rucking and really lifted the team when he came back on), Paul Dane (great tackling, carried hard and snuffed out many PH attacks), Martin Gubby (class as ever at full back, great under the high ball, still got an outrageous step and put a couple of block buster tackles in) – MoTM award split between them.

4) George Tauton had a really strong first game for the club, carrying well and working hard in the loose.

Unfortunately darts ran out of steam in the final quarter of the game and park house ended up deserved winners. Still an enjoyable game that again demonstrates the strength in depth of the club, which any club in the county would be envious of. Thanks to all of the guys that turned up and made it a competitive fixture Park House pitch being frozen.
